Both series concluded on Thursday to set up the championship matchup.  Valencia brought home a big lead and quickly expanded it, but Girona did better for the rest of the game and threatened to flip the aggregate to their favor, but a 73-66 win still left them short 127-122.  Avenida had a narrower advantage when play started in Salamanca, but they wasted no time rolling to a 75-39 win to push their aggregate margin to 148-105 over Sedis.

All four series concluded on Thursday at the homes of the higher seeds.  Girona had a small lead from their first game, but quickly expanded it with a 67-54 win pushing the final margin to 128-110.  Zaragoza immediately cut into the deficit that they had accrued at home, but Sedis recovered and a 58-all tie left them advancing comfortably 133-115.  Avenida breezed to a 73-43 win over Gernika for a 158-113 aggregate scoreline.  The last game was from the series with a tie in the first game so no complicated calculations were needed to determine the winner, but Valencia made it even easier as they crushed Estudiantes 72-35 to advance 131-94.

All four first games of the quarterfinals series were played on Sunday with lower seeds hosting in the two game format as the higher seeds will host on Thursday.  Girona was shorthanded again with another virus case, but did win the first game at Gipuzkoa 61-56.  The new format created the possibility of ties and that is what happened in Madrid between Estudiantes and Valencia at 59.  Sedis got contributions up and down the lineup in a 75-57 win over Zaragoza.  The last game of the day had Kahleah Copper lead Avenida past Gernika 85-70.

Spanish League Round 30 April 15th-19th

April 20, 2022 by Andrew

Two teams had three games to play and they took care of their Round 25 game against each other on Friday.  Neither team had their full roster, but there was an opportunity for messages to be sent about a possible championship meeting and it went back and forth in Girona before Magali Mendy led the hosts to a 79-78 win over Avenida.  The originally scheduled final round with simultaneous tipoffs was played on Sunday even with two games Tuesday.  Valencia was happy to get one player back in a 75-61 win over Araski.  After a fast start in Lugo, it got a little close for Girona, but they still won 75-69 over Ensino.  Bembibre found themselves trailing after a quarter to a Ferrol team just playing out the string, but they controlled the rest of the game to win 80-47 to leave themselves checking other scores to see if they secured safety.  Zaragoza has some momentum heading into the playoffs as Merritt Hempe and Sierra Calhoun led them to an 81-64 win over Jovana Nogic and Promete.  Leganes started well, but got no help from their neighbors as Begona De Santiago and Melisa Gretter led Estudiantes to a 74-68 win.  Gernika sewed up the last playoff spot with a 63-52 win over Sedis.  That was not the help that Gran Canaria needed and they ended up losing to Leonor Rodriguez Avenida 79-55 anyway.  Theresa Plaisance did everything that she could for Tenerife, but it was not enough to avoid the drop as they lost to Gipuzkoa 82-76.  The first game Tuesday was from Round 26 with Girona winning at Gernika 82-75.  Leganes had a wild season mercifully ended with their Round 28 game, an 80-48 loss to Avenida.

Spanish League Round 29 April 12th-13th

April 14, 2022 by Andrew

This round started on Tuesday instead of the originally scheduled simultaneous tipoffs to ease Girona’s schedule at then end of the season.  They were still quite shorthanded, but Ferrol could not take advantage and locked themselves into last place after falling 58-47.  The rest of the games stayed at the same time and Theresa Plaisance and Tenerife had an impressive win 77-58 over Valencia to pull into a safe spot.  Gran Canaria kept their playoff hopes alive with a 67-58 win over Gipuzkoa.  Katie Lou Samuelson fired Avenida past Sedis 70-49.  A home win would have helped Leganes greatly, but they did not start well and lost to Gernika, which still has the edge on the last playoff spot, 65-59.  Jovana Nogic led Promete to a 72-54 win over Estudiantes even with nothing at stake compared to their opponents.  Amber Melgoza and Bembibre are now in the drop zone after losing to Sierra Calhoun and Zaragoza 75-61.  Ensino’s trio of Natalie Van Den Adel, Georgina Bahi, and Laura Aliaga got them a 90-59 win over Araski in a battle of teams with nothing to play for now.

A pair of games were made up on Wednesday with this round played over the weekend.  Estudiantes won 57-48 at Zaragoza in a Round 23 game while Kennedy Burke paced Girona in a 55-45 Round 21 win over Sedis.  On Saturday, Merritt Hempe and Zaragoza took advantage of Girona continuing to be down multiple players and won 72-64.  Melisa Brcaninovic and Gernika solidified their playoff hopes with a 75-56 win over Promete as the club also celebrated a big anniversary.  Mariam Coulibaly lifted Gipuzkoa past Sedis 74-54.  Rebecca Allen and Valencia left Lugo with a 74-64 win over Natalie Van Den Adel and Ensino.  Ferrol is almost out of chances for a dramatic escape after losing to Araski 62-42.  The island rivals met on Sunday and it was Tenerife that gave themselves a shot at safety with a 78-73 win even though Lydia Giomi and Valerie Nesbitt both had good games for Gran Canaria right before the draft.  Bembibre could not stay safe by a game in the win column after losing to Arica Carter and Estudiantes 71-53.

Spanish League Round 27 March 28th-April 4th

April 4, 2022 by Andrew

The number of games that still need to be made up meant an unusual schedule with games on eight consecutive days.  That started last Monday in Lugo with Ensino rolling past Bembibre 69-52 to finish up Round 16.  It was time for a Round 26 game on Tuesday that Valencia won 76-63 over Ferrol even down another two players.  Round 17 finished on Wednesday with Avenida’s 68-54 win over Gipuzkoa.  On Thursday, Round 19 was finished with Girona’s 74-49 win over Promete.  This round started with Valencia’s 67-61 win over Blanca Millan and Gran Canaria.  On Friday, a Round 26 game was made up in Salamanca with Avenida winning 55-38 over Bembibre.  Saturday started with Sedis’s 80-65 win over Theresa Plaisance and Tenerife.  Vega Gimeno led Zaragoza past Araski 79-69.  Vionise Pierre-Louis helped Leganes move a little further from danger on Sunday by edging Mariam Coulibaly and Gipuzkoa 66-65.  Avenida did not build a comfortable lead until the second half, but did win 67-55 against Promete as they prepare for the continental championship.  Julia Reisingerova took the lead for a depleted Girona side as they won a dour 51-42 affair against Estudiantes.  Ferrol is still a win behind the rest of the league as they fell to Ensino 72-63 in Lugo.  Monday’s game was a good one as Bembibre had the chance to move one win above danger and did enough late to prevail 78-75 over Gernika.
