Spanish League Round 18 January 18th-23rd

January 23, 2022 by Andrew

A game from Round 15 was made up on Tuesday with new look Tenerife losing to Mariam Coulibaly and Gipuzkoa 74-51 as Lena Niang made her professional debut for the visitors.  This round started on Saturday with Girona stifling Bembibre 67-48.  Valencia was even more shorthanded in a game with future implications as Katie Lou Samuelson helped Avenida run out to a lead only to have to hold on for a 72-68 win.  Sedis did enough late for a 60-54 win over Ferrol.  All games were played on Sunday so a full round was able to be completed as scheduled for the first time in weeks.  The first game of the day was the old Basque Country rivalry and Gipuzkoa pulled away from Gernika in the fourth quarter to win 75-54.  Maya Caldwell led Gran Canaria, but they could not get a win to move themselves back into a safe position as Sierra Calhoun and Zaragoza left with a 74-72 victory.  Tenerife also had the chance to not be stranded at the bottom of the danger zone and got a good game from Theresa Plaisance, but Estudiantes had the better of the fourth quarter in a 63-60 win.  Ensino did move a game above the fray with a 75-49 win at Leganes.  Promete ended the day with a 75-50 win over Tanaya Atkinson and Araski.

Avenida battled their travel schedule as much as anything else in an 83-38 palindrome win over Bembibre to start the round on Saturday.  Arica Carter and Estudiantes completely dominated the first half to win 93-57 at Araski.  Neither team was at the races early, but Valencia won 67-52 over Ferrol.  The day ended with a 65-48 Sedis win over Maya Caldwell and Gran Canaria.  Sunday’s games started in Lugo with Ensino’s 62-56 win over Zaragoza.  Gipuzkoa’s strong second half behind Joy Brown helped them win 81-65 in Logrono to keep Promete from being too far ahead of the rest of the chase pack.  Leganes kept Tenerife stranded at the bottom of the standings 69-61.  Girona has hopes of being at full strength soon, but in the last game of the round, they needed to rally to force overtime only to fall to Lashann Higgs and Gernika 63-62.
