Spanish Cup March 24th-27th

March 27, 2022 by Andrew

The cup started in Valencia on Thursday and Avenida was able to debut their latest signing, but are still not full strength as they struggled with Gipuzkoa, but won 60-56.  The next game was also close as Tinara Moore lifted Gernika past Sedis 55-51.  Things were more decisive on Friday with Girona rolling past Estudiantes 89-41.  The hosts closed the day with a 65-55 win over Zaragoza.  The semifinals were on Saturday, starting with Avenida’s 72-56 win over Gernika.  Cristina Ouvina tried to carry Valencia, but the hosts were bounced out by Girona in 67-59.  That left the two teams that have been the strongest recently playing for the trophy on Sunday.  Avenida built a lead in the second half and had to fend off one final run from Girona to win 74-69 and maintain the edge as the postseason approaches.

Games involving teams in international play had to be moved, but the rest of the round was played over the weekend.  On Saturday, Lauren Cox and Gipuzkoa won 57-39 against Promete.  A battle of teams looking for a win that would move them a step further away from danger saw Leganes have the stronger fourth quarter for a 62-55 win over Tenerife.  It was a similar game pattern over on Gran Canaria as Sedis left with a 77-69 win.  On Sunday, Zaragoza had a 64-60 win over Ensino.  Arica Carter helped Estudiantes edge Araski 66-65.  With neither team involved in the Queen’s Cup, a game from Round 15 was played on Tuesday and Amber Melgoza and Bembibre are tied in the wins column for the last safe spot again after a 69-63 win over Tanaya Atkinson and Araski.

March 16, 2022

Other than games moved for continental play, a full round was played on Wednesday with tons of implications in the danger zone as teams at the bottom have improved over recent weeks.  Bembibre was close to picking up a win at home, but fell to Gipuzkoa 60-59.  In Lugo, Ensino won 70-60 over Estudiantes as they try to stay above the fray and in a clear safe position.  Ferrol had looked to be in the most trouble, but crushed Zaragoza 74-49.  Vionese Pierre-Louis and Leganes are still on the right side of the line after a 79-75 win over Gran Canaria, which was led by Maya Caldwell and Blanca Millan.  Tenerife is now ahead of trouble in the wins column after Theresa Plaisance led them past Promete 62-60.  Tanaya Atkinson and Leia Dongue teamed up for Araski in an 85-62 win over their Basque Country neighbors Gernika.

Two games were made up on Wednesday, including Tenerife looking to start a dramatic escape with a 72-67 overtime win at Gernika in a Round 17 game.  Round 20 was finished with a 67-63 win for Jewel Tunstull and Sedis over Tanaya Atkinson and Araski.  This round started on Friday with games involving a couple teams also focused on continental play including Valencia’s 84-74 win over Vega Gimeno and Zaragoza.  Rebekah Gardner and Frida Eldebrink teamed up to lead Girona past Gipuzkoa 87-72.  On Saturday, Ferrol kept it close for a while in Madrid, but Arica Carter and Mariona Ortiz led Estudiantes to an 80-65 win.  Avenida won 75-56 over Araski.  Tinara Moore was unstoppable for Gernika in an 84-75 win over Laura Aliaga and Ensino.  Vionese Pierre-Louis had a good game for Leganes, but they are firmly in danger too after a 76-56 loss to Sedis.  Maya Caldwell and Gran Canaria ended the day with a 70-61 win over Jovana Nogic and Promete.  Sunday’s games had major implications for which teams would face the drop and it went into overtime before Tenerife escaped with a 76-73 win over Bembibre to create a logjam at the bottom.

Spanish League Round 23 March 2nd-6th

Five games from other rounds were played on Wednesday ahead of a full round over the weekend.  Kennedy Burke and Rebekah Gardner teamed up to lead Girona past Leia Dongue and Araski 93-68 in a Round 16 game.  Ferrol pulled into a safe spot for now with a 77-50 Round 17 win over Leganes.  Avenida had to deal with more sudden absences, but did enough for a 62-56 Round 19 win over Gernika.  A close game in Lugo from Round 17 went to Ensino 61-55 over Promete.  A game from Round 25 was brought forward due to continental play and Valencia had an easy 75-50 win over Sedis.

One game from this round had to be postponed, but there were still three on Saturday.  Ferrol could not sustain momentum, losing to Angie Bjorklund and Gernika 79-62.  Bembibre got an good win though, halting Gran Canaria’s run 59-47.  Avenida pulled away from Ensino in the second half to leave Lugo with a 72-47 win.  Sunday’s first game was between Basque Country neighbors as Gipuzkoa left with a 75-67 win over Leia Dongue and Araski.  Imani Tate had a good game for Leganes, but Valencia won 81-65.  A rather dour affair saw Sedis do just enough to get past Promete 45-39.  Tenerife is now stranded with little margin for error after a 73-50 loss to Girona.

There were no games scheduled for the beginning of the month to allow for a two and a half week international break, but the large number of games that needed to be made up left a number of games scheduled for the first week.  The last game from Round 14 was played on Wednesday and Angie Bjorklund led Gernika to an 85-61 win despite another fantastic effort from Imani Tate for Leganes.  Gran Canaria had the better start at home in a Round 15 game made up on Thursday, but Emese Hof and Avenida eventually shook off the difficulties of just playing a hard game to win 67-49.  Another Round 15 game was played on Friday with an easy 86-65 win for Valencia over Araski.  On Saturday, Maya Caldwell helped Gran Canaria edge Estudiantes 56-53 in a Round 17 game.  Avenida finished their tour of the Canary Islands with Kahleah Copper leading them to a 90-47 win over struggling Tenerife in a Round 16 game, although the hosts did hand a professional debut to Alex Obouh Fegue after she left college early.

Two games from Round 15 were made up on Wednesday.  Amber Melgoza helped Bembibre edge Ferrol 66-62.  The battle of the Madrid teams went to Estudiantes 80-68 despite a great game from Vionise Pierre-Louis for Leganes.  Two games in this round had to be moved for continental competition, but the rest of the games started Saturday with Tanaya Atkinson and Leia Dongue teaming up to lead Araski past Imani Tate and Leganes 88-80.  Sedis left Lugo with a 67-58 win over Ensino.  Gipuzkoa had an easy 81-55 win over Estudiantes.  Gran Canaria fended off Ferrol 66-64 to move out of the danger zone and leave the hosts a win below the teams that are currently above the fray.  Tenerife is stranded further after falling behind quickly in Zaragoza and losing 81-65.  It was an easy 83-47 win for Valencia against Bembibre.  With both of their opponents needing to reserve this time, a game from Round 13 was played and it went to overtime in Logrono before Gernika won 74-70 over Jovana Nogic and Promete.
