On Tuesday, a Round 21 game was made up as Katie Lou Samuelson led Avenida past Sedis 80-57.  On Wednesday, Valencia and Girona played their Round 22 game that was moved due to both teams’ continental adventures and it was the hosts that held on to a 58-55 win to establish themselves as the second place team so far.  Estudiantes left Caceres with a 59-56 win in a Round 19 game.  On Thursday, Clarinos won 66-61 at Promete in a Round 23 game.  One of Saturday’s games from this round could not be played.  The early game in Logrono saw Lyndra Weaver lead Promete past Ensino 78-72.  Arica Carter and Estudiantes crushed Zaragoza 83-54.  Bembibre looked to build some space between themselves and danger, but Araski won 72-54.  Maria Espana fired Gran Canaria past Gipuzkoa 86-73.  Avenida breezed past Clarinos 76-36.  On Sunday, Zamarat did not have a miracle for themselves as they lost to Valencia 78-52.  Sonja Vasic helped Girona leave Caceres with an 83-58 win.

Spanish League Round 26 February 16th-21st

February 21, 2021 by Andrew

Not all the planned makeup games could be played as Estudiantes could not host Avenida in a Round 22 game set for Tuesday or host Araski in a Round 20 game scheduled for Thursday.  Girona did come back to beat Gran Canaria 79-73 in a Round 19 game on Tuesday.  On Thursday, Zaragoza crushed Promete 104-60 behind Markeisha Gatling and Chantelle Handy.  This round was supposed to start with the classic Basque Country rivalry game, but it was postponed.  Instead, the best game Saturday was in Lugo with Ensino holding on to a 76-73 win over Sedis.  Valencia beat Araski 69-58.  Out on Tenerife, Clarinos handed Zamarat a 91-60 loss that virtually seals the fate of the visitors at the bottom of the standings.  On Sunday, Avenida was challenged, but prevailed 77-71 over Zaragoza.  Estudiantes was able to return to play for their trip to Gran Canaria, but lost 70-65.  Girona rolled past Promete 93-57.  The key game was at the end of the day with the winner getting a leg up in the battle for safety.  Lashann Higgs and Julia Gladkova led Bembibre to the 68-55 win over Al-Qazeres to leave the visitors in the danger zone.

A full round of games was able to be played on Sunday, starting in Salamanca with a 107-66 win for Avenida over Gran Canaria.  Sedis edged Gipuzkoa 67-62 and Gernika beat Estudiantes 64-53.  Victoria Vivians and Zamarat are running out of chances for escape after losing to Zaragoza 82-71.  Laura Quevedo led Araski past Clarinos 81-64.  Valencia left Caceres with a 74-53 win.  That result meant that a wild game that saw Lashann Higgs and Julia Gladkova help Bembibre prevail 79-75 in two overtimes over Lyndra Weaver, Laia Flores, and Promete pushed the visitors into a tie for the last safe spot.  Girona left Lugo with an 89-74 win over Vega Gimeno and Ensino.

The snow game was supposed to be played on Friday, but was postponed for more traditional reasons.  That meant the first game was on Saturday with Gipuzkoa beating Zamarat 70-58.  Sparkle Taylor led Gran Canaria past Al-Qazeres 70-64 as both teams try to steer clear of danger.  It was a tough turnaround for Clarinos on Sunday, flying back to Tenerife after a tough week of continental competition and they lost to Ensino 72-63.  A game already postponed from Round 19 had to be postponed again, so there was only one game on Tuesday.  Sedis returned from their continental foray with a 74-61 win at Bembibre.

Just as it looked like the league was going to be completely on schedule again, games were affected left and right, leaving four games on Sunday.  Avenida started the new year with another win, getting past Laura Quevedo and Araski 76-65.  Zamarat did move in the right direction in their difficult attempt to escape danger, beating Sedis 68-58.  Angie Bjorklund helped Gernika leave Lugo with a 78-66 win over Ensino.  Bembibre also moved towards safety with a 66-63 win over Zaragoza despite a great game from Markeisha Gatling for the visitors.  The final count of games that could not be played was three, but testing did come through in time for Valencia to beat Clarinos 98-60 on Tuesday.
