Group C started play in Buenos Aires on Thursday as there are two teams in the group from Argentina.  The first of them to play, Berazategui beat Victoria of Ecuador, which relied on its veteran imports, 81-62.  Quimsa started poorly against Marta Peralta and Leonas Guaranies from Paraguay, but won 77-64.  On Friday, Berazategui beat Leonas Guaranies 73-57.  Quimsa used a strong second half to beat Victoria 68-58 to set up the big matchup in Saturday’s last game.  The first game of the final day was a chance for both teams to at least record a win and it was Victoria that did so 57-48 over Leonas Guaranies.  The game for the top spot was tense and close throughout as Berazategui just edged Quimsa 46-45.

The continent-wide club championship returned this year with twelve teams split into three groups that will play round-robins over a three-day period.  Group B is first this week with teams playing in Colombia as Medellin hosts.  Ecuador’s Audaz Octubrino brought in the strongest contingent of foreigners in the group and won the opener on Thursday over Lara of Venezuela 71-56.  Katrina Pardee tried to fire Ramallo Lafuente of Bolivia past the host Lionesses, but Yaneth Arias and the hosts managed to hang on 67-66.  Friday’s games started with Katrina Pardee trying to shoot Ramallo Lafuente back into the game against Audaz Octubrino, but Shacobia Barbee helped the Ecuadorian club win again 67-62.  Yosimar Corrales and the Shepherdesses of Lara struggled against Medellin’s Lionesses, losing to Jenifer Munoz and company 93-65.  The two winless teams met first on Saturday and it was Yosimar Corrales and Lara that got the 84-77 win over Katrina Pardee and Ramallo Lafuente.  Medellin looked ready to win the group at home, but Jacinta Monroe and Audaz Octubrino finished a comeback to win 70-65.

Final:

It was a battle of the favorite against the home team to determine the championship on Thursday.  Brazil did not want a repeat of the last game and built a big lead early, cruising to the 94-75 win.  The trio of former WNBA players led the way again with Iziane Castro Marques and Kelly Santos taking charge early.  Roselis Silva, Venezuela’s big scorer, had her best game of the tournament, but it was not enough.  Brazil now waits for the Olympics on home soil while Venezuela hopes to take momentum from this tournament with them to France as they try to qualify.

3rd Place Game:

The day started with the game for the bronze medal.  It was close throughout with Colombia edging proceedings 59-55.  Argentina would have liked to approach Olympic qualifying with more momentum after three consecutive losses.  Maria Palacio led the way in the win as the victors will consider their summer to have been very productive as they look forward to playing again next year.

Semifinals:

The four remaining teams had already secured qualification, but the playoffs for the championship started on Wednesday.  Brazil had not been tested previously and got off to a solid start against Argentina, but let the underdogs fight their way back to tie the game after third quarter.  The overwhelming favorites recovered with a dominant final frame to win 73-57 with Iziane Castro Marques getting some help from Palmira Cristina Marcal.  The hosts closed the day against Colombia, building a lead early, but then needing to hang on for the 67-59 win.  Waleska Perez paced Venezuela again as she will need her teammates to also be at their best if they want to pull off the upset on Thursday.  Mabel Martinez led all scorers, but it was not enough for the win.

5th Place Playoff:

The day started with the playoff to determine which team might get another chance at making it to next summer’s tournament if a spot opens up after this summer.  Paraguay took the early lead, but Ecuador fought back before falling behind further in the second half and losing 72-52.  Maria Mercado had a great all around performance and got some help from the two former collegiate players.  Dayanna Salcedo had a solid effort in the loss, but it was not enough for the team to qualify again as they did last summer.

Group A:

Colombia had their final game first, so they needed a win to make sure that the later game would not have an effect on them.  They took care of business as Junior College player Maria Delgado caught fire to lead them to the 83-42 win over Uruguay.  Brazil left no doubt about which team was the best in the group with a 128-35 pasting of Paraguay.

Group A:

Two teams were looking for their first win as Monday action started.  Maria Pereyra had a good game for Uruguay, but Chile’s play inside fueled by Tatiana Gomez helped them to the 92-58 win, but both teams ended up being eliminated.  The other game was between teams that knew that a win would most likely send them through to the Semifinals and next summer’s bigger tournament while a loss would reduce those chances with the need to navigate a playoff and hope for other events to go their way.  Colombia seized the moment and handed Paraguay their first loss 92-58.  Narlyn Mosquera and Mabel Martinez led the way in the win as the team will want to win their final group game on Tuesday to make sure of their qualification.

Group B:

The first game in the last day of play in this group was to determine the last team to keep hopes of meaningful basketball next summer alive.  Ecuador gave Peru a merciful end to their tough tournament with a balanced attack in an 85-57 win.  They now take a day off before the fifth place playoff.  The two group leaders closed the day of play knowing that seeding could have a big impact on their chances of reaching the final.  It was as good of a game as expected, going to overtime before Venezuela was lifted enough by the home fans to edge out Argentina 71-67.  Gisela Vega had a great game inside, but it was not enough as former collegians Ivaney Marquez and Waleska Perez had good all around games to take their team to the top of the group.  The teams now get a day off while their next opponents all have to play another game.

Group A:

Paraguay is in good shape to stay in contention for next summer after opening Sunday’s games with an 83-69 win over Chile.  Tatiana Gomez was the leading scorer, but she did not have as much help as Maria Mercado, with the two former collegiate players helping her out in the win.  Brazil had a tougher test with Colombia, but still eased to the 76-55 win with Iziane Castro Marques and the other former WNBA players leading the way.  Brazil will now definitely move on to the semifinals and has qualified for next summer’s tournament.

Group A:

Paraguay was the last team in the group to start their tournament as they were also missing their star player, but beat Uruguay 62-56.  Maria Caraves took on the leading role for the team.  Brazil had another easy game, rolling to a 104-54 win over Chile as their three former WNBA players led the way.  Barbara Cousino, who just had a very solid season at the Junior College level, had a good game, but it was not enough in the loss.
