The playoffs started on Monday as the series format for the quarterfinals is 1-2 to minimize travel.  Enisey took advantage of being able to host the first game, taking the series lead with an 80-65 win over Nika in Krasnoyarsk before heading to Syktyvkar.  The first game on Tuesday saw MBA win 83-55 in Novosibirsk.  A matchup that used to happen later in the playoffs started with Adelina Abaiburova leading Dynamo Kursk to an 84-71 win over Nadezhda in Orenburg.  Maria Vadeeva and Ekaterinburg looked like they would win early against their rivals from a different era Spartak Moscow, but the hosts took the lead after the break and were forced into overtime before prevailing 82-80.  Each series will continue on Saturday with deciding games on Sunday if necessary.

Russian League Round 21 March 17th-24th

March 24, 2022 by Andrew

The last set of regular season games started last Thursday as Raisa Musina led Nika past Dynamo Moscow 75-57 in Syktyvkar.  The two teams that did not have roster changes met and MBA had a strong second half to win 87-73 over Southern Federal University.  On Saturday, Enisey was the first team to finish the regular season after a 63-58 win over Polina Fedorova and Spartak Moscow.  The rest of what had been scheduled as the last round of the regular season was played on Sunday, starting in Novosibirsk with a 76-55 Dynamo win over Spartak Noginsk behind Vitalina Zvereva.  The rosters were not quite the same as past matchups, even with Ekaterinburg adding another player, but Maria Vadeeva did help them come back in the second half for a 77-42 win over Dynamo Kursk.  Kyara Linskens led Nadezhda to a 77-72 win over Dynamo Moscow in Orenburg.  A good game for Daria Kurilchuk was not enough for Samara in an 88-67 loss to MBA in Moscow.  Raisa Musina and Hind Ben Abdelkader was the key combination for Nika again as they won 99-70 over Ekaterina Ryabova and Southern Federal University in Syktyvkar.  The last few games of the regular season were played midweek, starting in Novosibirsk on Wednesday when Olga Stolyar and Dynamo edged Spartak Moscow 67-64.  Yulia Kozik and Dynamo Kursk showed that they should still be considered a step ahead of MBA right now with the expectation that they will meet in the playoffs.  Southern Federal University won 74-61 over Dynamo Moscow in Rostov-on-Don on Thursday, but that was not enough to get them any higher in the standings.

Dear BG,

None of us can even begin to imagine how you’re feeling right now. I know I can’t. Many of us have played in Russia and know all too well how dark and grim that country can sometimes be, especially in the winter. But as I sit here and think of you, I can only think about the joy you bring to so many people. Young girls and boys look up to you with amazement. They really can’t believe how tall you are, that you’re a real person. Even adults are in awe; they either push for a picture or an autograph or just stop and stare.

People love watching you play. The Mighty Mercury would do anything for you. They love their players! You really are larger than life. I just wish people really knew you. I wish they knew how you take the time to speak to people, to smile and laugh with kids, how considerate and compassionate you can be. How you’d give the clothes off your back to someone in need. They don’t get to see that side of you. They only see what the media shows, and assumptions people make on their own, but we know you, your basketball sisters know you and guess what? We have your back! I mean we REALLY have your back.

The abundance of love and support around this situation has been powerful to say the least. From the top to the bottom, we are aligned, and we just want you home safe and sound! Nothing else matters. #FREEBG is catchy, but this isn’t just some trending moment or a hashtag, this is your life, and we genuinely care. Not sure what news you’re catching over there, if any at all, but my hope is that you feel the outpouring of concern, support, attention, and love coming from us. Maybe you’re confined to some hotel or something for now. I don’t even let my mind wander to anything other than that but wherever you are and whatever you are feeling, I hope that you are safe and that someone is showing you care.

This situation sucks and we honestly don’t even know what’s true, but I hope that this is a lesson for us all to show grace. For our community to come together and understand that life is much bigger than sport, but sport is what connects us all. Through trials and tribulations, through the highs and the lows, the one thing that has the power to bring people together is sport and Britt we are thinking about you, we love you and we can’t wait to have you back!

Foreign players leaving teams began to affect rosters on Wednesday.  Ekaterinburg had a drastic player availability change, but Maria Vadeeva and Anastasia Shilova led them past Enisey 93-79 in Krasnoyarsk.  Nika also lost players and were defeated 74-57 by MBA in Syktyvkar.  Neither team had foreign players on Thursday as Samara won 60-48 over Dynamo Novosibirsk.  This round started on Saturday with Maria Vadeeva leading Ekaterinburg again as they also strengthened their roster in an 85-67 win over Varvara Psareva and Nika.  Games continued on Sunday, starting in Novosibirsk where Dynamo Kursk left with an 86-52 win.  Enisey was dealing with a roster change for the first time, but won 83-65 over Samara in Krasnoyarsk.  Nadezhda is down to one foreigner as they lost to MBA 76-62 in Orenburg.  Spartak Moscow also had one fewer foreigner as they won 80-50 over Southern Federal University.  Both teams had lost players since their last game so Spartak Noginsk was no closer to a win when they lost to Dynamo Moscow 79-62.

League play resumed after a three week international break and Allie Quigley led Ekaterinburg in a 93-57 win over Dynamo Novosibirsk.  Arike Ogunbowale and Natasha Howard teamed up to lead Dynamo Kursk past Dynamo Moscow 96-67.  Hind Ben Abdelkader lifted Nika Syktyvkar past Unique Thompson and Spartak Moscow 76-66.  Saicha Grant-Allen and Samara edged one of the other recent league additions in Southern Federal University 71-66.  On Monday, Natisha Hiedeman and Markeisha Gatling helped Nadezhda Orenburg rally in the second half to leave Orenburg with a 90-84 win over Julie Vanloo and Enisey to avoid what could have been a troublesome loss for playoff implications.  In the middle of a busy schedule, MBA was able to get their game played in Moscow and Maria Kaytukova led them to a 92-68 win over Spartak Noginsk.
