Romanian League Quarterfinals Game 1 April 12th-13th

Quarterfinals:

The playoffs did not get off to an auspicious start with Constanta being unable to play due to virus cases, meaning that Arad advanced automatically.  Two series did start on Monday, including Becca Tobin leading Sepsi past Agronomia 88-56 in Sfantu Gheorghe.  In Satu Mare, Bria Goss and Claudia Cuic led Satu Mare past Cluj-Napoca 94-44.  The last series started on Tuesday with Brasov getting big games for Biljana Pesovic and Ines Corda to get past Ancuta Stoenescu and Targoviste 77-72.

Consolation Bracket:

At the other end of the standings, teams played series under the same format starting Monday with the team that finished higher getting to host the first two games.  The unusual format of the season meant that not all teams had played at home and teams could be eliminated without ever playing in their usual venues.  Florina Stanici and Teodora Manea led Rapid past Alexandria 70-62 to start the day.  Chelsea Mitchell had a triple-double and Iringo Debreczi also chipped in across the board as Targu Secuiesc kept Oradea winless 124-37.

Romanian League Makeup Games April 7th-8th

The original goal was to make up the rest of the regular season over a four day period.  The only games that could be scheduled were a pair in Satu Mare.  Bria Goss and Patricia Bright paced the hosts, who also got a triple-double from Claudia Cuic in a 126-57 win over Nikki McDonald and Brasov.  Brasov did turn around and beat Oradea 79-35 on Thursday.  The league then awarded the rest of the games, including Oradea officially going winless with their game against Targoviste not played.   Cluj-Napoca had four games to make up against teams below them in the standings, which meant wins given to Agronomia, Rapid, Alexandria, and Phoenix Constanta.

Cluj-Napoca could not make the Arad pod for the weekend in what was supposed to be final days of play.  The other teams did make it and the hosts got a 76-55 win over Tierra Henderson and Constanta on Friday.  Saturday’s games started in Targu Secuiesc as Chelsea Mitchell nearly scored enough on her own for the hosts to win as they breezed past Oradea 102-27.  Satu Mare figures to be the team with the best chance to challenge Sepsi and it took until the final quarter for the hosts to win 73-68.  Agronomia was hosting again in Bucuresti and the first game was a good one with Sara Dickey and Ines Corda forming a potent duo for Brasov in an 89-79 win over Florina Stanici and Rapid.  The other game had less scoring as the hosts edged Targoviste 54-48.

Romanian League Rounds 19 and 20 March 20th-23rd

March 23, 2021 by Andrew

The format for these two round was supposed to be simple with two pods playing over the weekend and the other one on Monday and Tuesday, but virus cases meant that multiple teams could not make it to their games.  Agronomia hosted one group and Arad won the Saturday game 72-47 over Rapid behind Ecaterina Armanu and Brankica Hadzovic.  In Targoviste, the Round 20 game was played with Ancuta Stoenescu and Alina Chivu helping the hosts edge Patricia Bright, Claudia Cuic, and Satu Mare 70-66.  All the absent teams meant that only one game was played on Sunday and it was Agronomia hosting Arad and losing 59-46.  All the teams were able to make it to the Sfantu Gheorghe pod on Monday and the first game saw Chelsea Mitchell lead Targu Secuiesc past Mihaela Burcica and Alexandria 66-47.  Hosts Sepsi eventually pulled away from Constanta for a 97-61 win.  On Tuesday, they beat Alexandria 97-47.  An unusual set of games ended with Tierra Henderson leading Constanta past Targu Secuiesc 59-51.

March 6, 2021 by Andrew

With this weekend being a set of two games at a single site, Agronomia was scheduled to make up the last two games that they missed, giving them the tough task of four games in four days in Satu Mare.  Two of the sames are against winless Oradea so they were able to cruise 83-36 in the first of those on Friday.  The schedule for the weekend mixed the official Round 15 and Round 16 games around with the Satu Mare Saturday games being from Round 16.  Rapid took it easy against Oradea in a 65-44 win and then the hosts beat Agronomia 67-45.  In Sfantu Gheorghe, Korine Campbell led Cluj-Napoca past Chelsea Mitchell and Targu Secuiesc 72-59.  Hosts Sepsi did not establish control until the second half, but Rebekah Gardner led them past Arad 78-61.  Brasov beat hosts Constanta 67-63 in the first game at that site.  Anisia Croitoru and Nicoleta Ghita paced Targoviste in an 83-42 win over Alexandria.
