Romanian League Round 19 February 9th

There is one fewer team in the league now after Botosani withdrew, but another round went by without all of the teams playing as there were five games on Wednesday.  Targoviste edged Alexandria 61-58 in the first game of the day.  Britney Jones and Brianna Fraser matched their opponent’s output between them in Sepsi’s 106-46 win over Florina Stanici and Rapid.  Arad is still well ahead at the top of the standings with games already played and won 70-59 over Cluj-Napoca behind Brankica Hadzovic.  Targu Secuiesc won 61-49 over Agronomia.  Constanta ended the day with a 56-49 win in Targu Mures.

A scheduled four games for this round on Friday ended up with only three played.  Ines Corda and Targu Secuiesc won 80-61 at Cluj-Napoca.  Satu Mare resumed their title chase with an 85-56 win over Targu Mures.  The capital rivals squared off with Anca Sipos and Renata Kovacs helping Agronomia past Florina Stanici and Rapid 77-60.

It was another round of four games played on Saturday, starting with Florina Stanici’s brilliance not being enough for Rapid in a 65-59 loss to Alexandra Uiuiu and Cluj-Napoca.  Constanta edged Gabriela Irimia and Targoviste 72-69.  It was not glamorous, but Alexandria beat Agronomia 49-33.  With the other two teams at the top of the standings not playing, Andreona Keys and Arad continued to build their lead in games played with an 84-59 triumph over Targu Secuiesc.

This round had four of its scheduled games played on Saturday.  Antoinette Lewis was impressive for Targu Secuiesc and Ines Corda gave them additional scoring punch in a 67-59 win over Rapid.  Brianna Fraser and Sepsi were not quite as overwhelming as in other games, but pulled away from Constanta to win 83-64.  Arad is still in a strong position as Brankica Hadzovic led them past Ruth Sherrill and Targu Mures 79-62.  Sparkle Taylor fired Satu Mare past Targoviste 94-54.

Four of the six games scheduled for Saturday were able to be played.  Andreona Keys and Arad built on their lead at the top of the standings with the two teams chasing them missing their game as they rolled past Florina Stanici and Rapid 88-46.  Myriam Lara led Alexandria past Ines Corda and Targu Secuiesc 78-67.  Da’Lishia Griffin and Ruth Sherrill teamed up in Targu Mures’s 78-60 win over Latinka Dusanic and Brasov.  The last game of the day was Constanta’s 83-57 win over Agronomia.

Two games in this round could not be played with one postponed early and another just before the remaining four games on Wednesday.  Constanta edged Cluj-Napoca 59-56 in the early game.  Florina Stanici led Rapid as usual, but they fell to Alexandria 77-47.  Arad nearly got knocked off their perch, but Andreona Keys and Tereza Vitulova helped them fend off Maja Scekic and Brasov 74-70.  The day ended with Sparkle Taylor leading Satu Mare past Agronomia 100-57.

A game from Round 12 was played on Wednesday and Brasov must be tired of seeing Sepsi at this point having played them three times consecutively, losing 103-37.  All the games that could be played in this round were on Saturday, starting with Sara Hinriksdottir pacing Constanta in a 77-69 overtime win over Targu Secuiesc.  Andreona Keys led Arad past Alexandria 63-44.  Two of the league’s most experienced players put on a show as Ancuta Stoenescu and Targoviste just edged Biljana Pesovic and Brasov 75-74.  Brianna Fraser helped Sepsi crush Targu Mures 113-40.  Sparkle Taylor continued to lead Satu Mare as they won 96-42 over Cluj-Napoca.

Romanian Cup Quarterfinals Game 2 December 30-January 6th

One series concluded quickly last Thursday as Brianna Fraser and Alina Podar helped Sepsi record a massive final margin as a 115-55 second game win over Biljana Pesovic, Ecaterina Armanu, and Brasov pushed the aggregate 240-101.  On Wednesday, Constanta won 86-59 over Targoviste to stretch the final margin to 163-115.  Satu Mare brought home a narrow lead and holding off Andreona Keys and Arad 76-75 was enough to advance 147-139.  The last series concluded on Thursday in Targu Mures with no complicated calculations needed after a tie in the first game.  The second game was close too, but Alexandria edged Sirius 49-43 to advance.

The first of the two-game series started on Tuesday and there will not be much to play for in the second game as Brianna Fraser and Nicolett Orban led Sepsi to a comprehensive 125-46 victory in Brasov.  The other three series started on Wednesday, opening with Constanta’s 77-56 win at Targoviste.  One series will not require any math when the teams head to Targu Mures after the teams played to a 64-all draw in Alexandria.  Andreona Keys had a big game for Arad, but Marta Fodor and Satu Mare left with a 71-64 win.

The round was not played quite as originally scheduled, but three games were played on Thursday ahead of the holiday break.  Sara Hinriksdottir led Constanta past Rapid 85-37 in the first game.  Veatriki Akathiotou paced Arad in a 71-55 win at Targoviste.  Laura Vaida opted to turn professional and made her debut for Agronomia in their 81-67 loss to Targu Mures, which got fantastic games from Ruth Sherrill and Da’Lishia Griffin.
