Puerto Rican League Week 6 November 13th-18th

November 19, 2018 by Andrew

The last week of the regular season started on Tuesday with two teams using duos in different ways.  Santurce won 86-75 as their guards Dayshalee Salaman and Michelle Gonzalez led the way while Yauco relied more heavily on their imports, getting good games from Whitney Jones and Chanita Jordan.  On Wednesday, Pamela Rosado and Manati beat San Sebastian 69-56.  Carolina is starting to look vulnerable at the worst possible time as Pachis Roberts helped Santurce win 68-62 on Thursday.  A tough debut season for San Sebastian did not end on a high on Friday as Madelyn Velazquez and Tierra Henderson led Manati to an 89-53 win.  Whitney Bays had a good game on Saturday, but Carolina lost to Santurce again, this time 70-67 as Michelle Gonzalez led the visitors.  The regular season ended on Sunday and Whitney Bays could not save Carolina as they lost to Tierra Henderson and Manati 70-66.  The margin became important later as Zuleimarie Sanchez and Yauco beat Santurce 83-78 to prevent a three-way tie at the top of the standings, leaving Carolina as the top seed due to goal average.  The playoffs will begin on Wednesday.

Puerto Rican League Week 5 November 6th-11th

November 12, 2018 by Andrew

The week started on Tuesday as usual and Carolina knew that they could not take San Sebastian lightly even with the teams on opposite ends of the standings as they took care of business 72-48.  On Wednesday, Santurce’s trio of Pachis Roberts, Dayshalee Salaman, and Mari Placido led them past Kathryn Westbeld and Manati 82-69.  San Sebastian was ready for a first win, starting extremely well, but Yauco fought back only to see the hosts built a lead heading into the final quarter before collapsing and letting the visitors escape with a 60-55 win.  San Sebastian’s dramatic struggles continued on Friday as Jordan Reynolds helped them build a lead, but Kathryn Westbeld and Pamela Rosado helped Manati force overtime and win 80-76.  The frustration finally ended on Saturday as Jordan Reynolds and San Sebastian just escaped Whitney Jones and Yauco 76-73 for their first even win.  There was no less drama in the other game as Michelle Gonzalez and Santurce came back to force overtime and then handed Whitney Bays and Carolina their first loss 81-79.  Carolina found themselves in a struggle again on Sunday, getting a good game from Nicci Gilday, but losing after two overtimes 72-70 to Kathryn Westbeld, Pamela Rosado, and Manati.

Puerto Rican League Week 4 October 30th-November 4th

November 5, 2018 by Andrew

The All Star Game was played last Sunday.  Due to the odd number of teams, a simple geographical split no longer made sense so a team featuring the bulk of the national team faced off against other players in the league, including imports.  Frances Lee Flores was named MVP as she hit a key basket for the national team in their 69-64 win.  DeSanta Franklin-Jordan was the MVP of the Future Stars Game, where San Sebastian beat a group of newcomers from other teams 64-60.  Daneichka Canales of Carolina won the Skills Challenge and Mari Placido of Santurce won the 3 Point Contest while the team of Ali Gibson, Tayra Melendez, and Whitney Bays from Carolina won the Shooting Stars contest.

The regular season resumed on Tuesday.  Annysa Sanchez and Whitney Jones teamed up to lead Yauco past Dayshalee Salaman and Yauco 95-83.  Daneichka Canales and Carolina were pushed by Pamela Rosado and Manati, but stayed undefeated with a 71-68 win.  No games were played on Wednesday, then Chanita Jordan and Whitney Jones led Yauco past Pamela Rosado and Manati on Thursday.  Whitney Bays helped Carolina stay undefeated with an 80-67 win over Santurce.  Jordan Reynolds had a good game for San Sebastian, but they still could not get their first win, losing to Santurce 84-64.  Saturday’s game was quite exciting as Kathryn Westbeld and Manati needed overtime to beat Yauco 67-66.  On Sunday, Anushka Maldonado and San Sebastian found themselves in an unexpected position to pick up their first win, giving Nicci Gilday and Carolina everything they could handle before the league leaders could escape 68-65 and maintain their perfect record.

Overtime was needed in Saturday’s game as Pamela Rosado could not keep Manati in it as Chanita Jordan helped Yauco escape with a 74-73 win.  On Sunday, first overall draft pick Anushka Maldonado had her best game yet for San Sebastian, but Whitney Bays and Carolina won 69-45.  On Tuesday, Nici Gilday took the lead scoring role for Carolina as they beat Yauco 83-77.  On Wednesday, Manati beat Santurce 71-54.  Carolina thought that they would roll again on Thursday after adding a key player, but Chanita Jordan and Yauco started well, forcing the visitors to stage a comeback in the second half and maintain their perfect record after overtime with a 79-74 win.  On Saturday, first draft pick Anushka Maldonado had a good game, but San Sebastian is still looking for their first win after an 88-59 loss to Santurce.

The start of the season was delayed due to Hurricane Irma, but action finally started on Wednesday.  The Pollitas made their return to Isabella as they hosted Aguada, losing 85-64.  The visitors used a balanced effort to get the win while Shayra Brown led the hosts and first overall pick in the draft Adily Martucci had a strong debut.  Yauco made their debut on Thursday, but a strong fourth quarter helped hosts Morovis win 68-59.  Import Mariesa Greene helped the duo of Pamela Rosado and Michelle Gonzalez.  Yauco is a young team, playing picks two, three, and four in the most recent draft as import Tierra Henderson led the way for them.  It was a big clash of league favorites on Friday when Aguada visited Carolina, using a strong second half to leave with the 64-55 win.  Yauco had the chance to play in front of their home fans for the first time and a great comeback got them the 68-65 win as Tierra Henderson had another great game.  Manati’s import duo of Atonye Nyingifa and Monique Reid were strong, but they did not get enough help.  Saturday’s game in Aguada was quite exciting as Dayshalee Salaman switched from providing to scoring to help the hosts win 77-74.  Maria Blazejewski delivered her first big game as an import for Morovis, which also got another good game from Pamela Rosado.  The other game was not as close as Monique Reid fired Manati past Isabela 82-62.  Yauco has a favorable early schedule and they made it count on Sunday by starting the second half well to beat Isabela 78-65.  Tierra Henderson continued her strong start to the season for the hosts while Adily Martucci played like a first overall pick as the early favorite for the rookie of the year.  Henderson did not slow down in a rare Monday game as Yauco put in an even more impressive performance to beat Carolina 76-63.  Shalonda Winton had a fantastic game for the hosts as the game was the last one played before a break due to Hurricane Maria.

Morovis needed a win at home to extend the series, but created too big of a deficit in the first half to come back from, losing 75-69.  Both imports had good games for the hosts as Shae Kelley and Sasha Goodlett did everything they could to keep their season alive.  The visitors used a more balanced effort to win their third consecutive title.

Both teams were looking for the series advantage in Game 5 on Sunday in Carolina.  The game was close throughout the first half before Carolina opened up a lead in the third quarter, which they were able to carry to a 72-63 win.  Alexis Hornbuckle led the way in the win, which was important with the visitors getting their usual big production from the import spots as Sasha Goodlett led all scorers.  Morovis will now have to win the next game at home on Tuesday to extend their season and keep their championship hopes alive.  Carolina will be looking to clinch a third straight title with one more win.
