Italian League Round 6 October 31st-November 1st

November 1, 2020 by Andrew

Games started being postponed again this round, but Venezia did win 84-52 at San Martino di Lupari on Saturday.  Ragusa was not able to play on Sunday, but the rest of the games went ahead.  A battle of undefeated teams saw Abby Bishop and Bologna take a lead in a key test of their ambitions, but Jillian Harmon and Giorgia Sottana helped Schio force overtime and then win 85-78.  Paulina Hersler and Battipaglia found themselves in the rare position of a possible win, but Costa Masnaga’s trio of young Matilde Villa, Lisa Jablonowski, and Beatrice Del Pero did enough to leave with an 84-79 win.  Nina Premasunac led Empoli past Laura Spreafico and Lucca 83-79.

Italian Super Cup September 24th-27th

September 27, 2020 by Andrew

With the abrupt ending to last season, the Super Cup was expanded to eight teams this season.  Two quarterfinals were played on Thursday, starting with Yvonne Anderson leading Venezia past Empoli 84-67 as Francesca Pan also returned to the club she played for before college.  Schio has not assembled their full roster, but looked strong behind Sandrine Gruda in a 108-52 win over Vigarano, although Ja’Tavia Tapley did make her professional debut in the loss.  The first game on Friday was quite exciting as a dramatic comeback attempt by San Martino di Lupari fell short against Lucca, which escaped 77-76.  Ty Marshall led Ragusa in a 70-64 win over Bashaara Graves and Sesto San Giovanni as Mariella Santucci also made her professional debut in the victory.  On Sunday, Venezia held the lead for most of the game on their way to a 73-64 win, but Schio will leave feeling like they still have a clear advantage once they can field their full roster.

Both semifinals were played on Saturday, starting with Venezia’s 88-51 win over Lucca.  Schio then beat Ragusa 82-60 to set up the expected final on Sunday.
