With teams playing in European competitions now, the schedule is a little different than the traditional one as Jasmine Bailey led San Martino di Lupari to a 67-61 win over Astou Ndour and Ragusa in a rare Friday game.  Venezia beat Umbertide 63-43 on Saturday.  It was a contrast of styles on Sunday as Vigarano got great production from both Lyndra Littles and Amber Orrange in an 89-77 win over a La Spezia side that field only Europeans.  Jillian Harmon led Lucca past Broni 71-63.  Schio beat Torino 83-48 in the last of the traditional time slot games.  The late game saw Theresa Plaisance lift Napoli past Battipaglia 68-48.

A game from Round 2 was made up on Saturday as Napoli came back to beat Lucca 69-68 at home.  Reshanda Gray’s work inside for the hosts helped offset the shooting of Francesca Dotto.  The regularly scheduled games resumed on Sunday with Venezia having a surprisingly easy time with Ragusa 68-47.  Ndidi Madu and Broni beat Brooque Williams and Battipaglia 65-58.  Kierra Mallard led the way for Umbertide as they beat Vigarano 78-63.  Laura Macchi and Schio had no issues with La Spezia, winning 97-54.  The teams that played make-up games had their normally scheduled games moved to Wednesday as Lucca beat Torino 69-55.  San Martino di Lupari won 73-63 despite Napoli getting great production from the WNBA post duo led by Reshanda Gray.

Italian Supercup Recap September 25th

italy

September 25, 2016

The Italian League ended up being surprisingly competitive a season ago and this season is likely to be another good one.  The two teams likely to be at the top of the standings opened up the season with the traditional Supercup.  Neither team was at full strength, but it was still a great game.  Schio was perceived to be the favorite and just edged proceedings 67-66.  In a terrific battle in the post, it was Isabelle Yacoubou who was the difference in getting her team the win.

The main league season will start next weekend as all the teams will converge on Lucca to play the first round of games at the same site on Saturday and Sunday.

Italian Cup Recap

The cup was played a little later than other years as the top four teams from the first half of the regular season qualified for Saturday’s semifinals.  Ragusa held off Venezia 63-58.  The second game saw Schio beat Lucca 68-60 even though Jillian Harmon had a fantastic game in the loss.  The final on Sunday ended up being an even better game.  The combination of Rebekkah Brunson and Camille Little was too much for Isabelle Yacoubou to handle on her own as Ragusa beat Schio 70-67.
