April 6, 2022

The last games of the regular season were played even without all games being made up.  Empoli’s solid run since being promoted to this level ended with a 95-66 loss to Ruthy Hebard and Ragusa.  Lucca is not back at full strength, but got a 64-56 win to secure homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs as Faenza was also trying to climb a spot in the standings.  The season is over for Ivana Raca and Sesto San Giovanni as they finished in the spot that is too low for the playoffs and too high for the playout after an 82-51 win over Sassari.  Lisa Jablonowski led Costa Masnaga past Broni 74-69.  Shae Kelley and Chelsea Mitchell had good games for San Martino di Lupari, which heads into the playoffs after a 74-67 win over Campobasso.  A game that had no seeding implications saw Schio win 64-54 at Bologna.

All of the games in this round tipped simultaneously on Saturday with the end of the season in mind.  Reshanda Gray’s best efforts for Campobasso were not enough in a 59-58 loss to Sesto San Giovanni.  Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah helped Faenza offset good games from Shae Kelley and Chelsea Mitchell to win 69-66 over San Martino di Lupari.  Laura Spreafico and Costa Masnaga suddenly look very impressive even if their 82-63 win came against a shorthanded Bologna.  Sassari had no chance against Schio, losing 87-52.  Broni edged Moncalieri 62-59 as both teams jostle for position for a better path to safety.  Lucca was able to field more players, but Ruthy Hebard and Ragusa were able to win 86-55 as the teams also figure to play in the playoffs.  Venezia heads to continental play after a 72-56 win over Empoli.

Italian League Makeup Games March 23rd-31st

March 31, 2022 by Andrew

A number of games still need to be made up with the original plan of the league wrapping up during the first week of April being on hold for now.  Last Wednesday, Campobasso won 71-62 behind Reshanda Gray in a Round 14 game against Empoli ahead of their cup game.  Another game from the round was played on Saturday since neither team was in the cup and Jessica Shepard lost her running mate early and Sassari fell to Costa Masnaga, which was led by the trio of Matilde Villa, Mikayla Vaughn, and Laura Spreafico.  Round 12 was finished on Sunday with two teams not in the cup trying to avoid getting sucked into the battle for last place and Julie Vanloo was brilliant for Moncalieri in a 73-62 win over Janae Smith and Broni.  A busy Wednesday started with the last game from Round 15, which saw Costa Masnaga’s increasingly powerful duo of Laura Spreafico and Matilde Villa leading them past Campobasso.  A Round 18 game included another big game for Jessica Shepard, but Ruthy Hebard and Ragusa won 80-68.  Empoli is running out of time to escape after losing to Chelsea Mitchell, Irene Guarise, and San Martino di Lupari.  Round 14 was also completed, starting with Venezia’s 72-53 win at Broni.  Players for Lucca have had virus symptoms, but not tested positive, so they were obligated to field a team, but held out players who might be sick, leaving them with only five players in the toughest possible test against Schio and were valiant in an 82-38 loss while rallying behind Giulia Natali.

More games were made up midweek, starting Tuesday with a Round 17 game that saw Bologna win 81-49 over Moncalieri.  Empoli avoided getting stuck too far behind in the automatic drop spot with a 59-48 win over Broni in a Round 21 game.  Two games from Round 15 were made up on Wednesday as Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah and Faenza edged Jazmon Gwathmey and Sesto San Giovanni 80-74.  Another terrific battle went to Jessica Shepard and Sassari 89-79 over Shae Kelley and San Martino di Lupari.  One game in this round could not be played due to continental play, but the round started with two games on Saturday.  Awak Kuier led Ragusa past Moncalieri 75-67 as the visitors were finally able to field their strongest lineup again.  Reshanda Gray paced Campobasso in a 78-74 win over Faenza.  Empoli could not continue their momentum on Sunday, losing to Costa Masnaga 68-57.  Jazmon Gwathmey and Sesto San Giovanni had a good first half, but Ivana Dojkic and Bologna came back late for a 65-63 win.  Lucca continued to play well with a 69-61 win over San Martino di Lupari.  Broni pulled away from the automatic drop spot with an 89-68 win over Jessica Shepard, Maggie Lucas, and Sassari.

A Round 15 game was played on Tuesday with Awak Kuier and Ragusa’s late rally falling short against Laura Westerik and Broni 74-71.  The two new teams in the league made up their Round 14 game on Wednesday with Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah helping Faenza do just enough to edge Moncalieri 54-51.  This round started on Thursday to accommodate Schio’s continental adventures and they won 72-54 at Empoli.  Brianna Turner and Ivana Dojkic helped Bologna start fat on Saturday on their way to an 81-61 win over Virginia Galbiati and Broni.  Venezia was healthy enough to return to action ahead of continental play and Astou Ndour-Fall and Yvonne Anderson led them past Sara Crudo, Valeria Trucco, and Sesto San Giovanni 86-75.  The Maggie Lucas-Jessica Shepard duo was not enough for Sassari in a 96-78 loss to Blake Dietrick and Lucca.  Sunday started with Ragusa easing to a 73-38 win over Faenza.  Ilaria Milazzo helped San Martino di Lupari fend off Costa Masnaga 71-69.  Julie Vanloo had a strong debut for Moncalieri, but they lost to Campobasso 64-56.

The last game from Round 5 was finally played on Tuesday after multiple postponements for different reasons.  Jessica Shepard and Maggie Lucas were Sassari’s dynamic duo again and they forced overtime on their way to a 91-89 win over Asia Taylor, Awak Kuier, and Ragusa.  Virus cases postponed the most anticipated game on Wednesday, but two were still played.  Shae Kelley had a good game for San Martino di Lupari, but Ivana Dojkic and Cecilia Zandalasini teamed up to lead Bologna to a 78-69 win in a Round 14 game.  Lucca is looking to establish themselves as the next best team behind the three early favorites, but they fell to Laura Spreafico and Costa Masnaga 74-69 in a Round 21 game.  A Round 12 game was played on Thursday with Campobasso winning 70-62 over Sesto San Giovanni.  Venezia needed another postponement, but games from this round started on Saturday.  Schio warmed up for continental competition with a 77-61 win over Campobasso.  Down a star, Jessica Shepard and Sassari were edged by Faenza 62-61.  Sunday’s first game was a 78-57 Ragusa win over San Martino di Lupari.  Jazmon Gwathmey led Sesto San Giovanni in an 85-56 win over Broni.  Empoli still has a chance at reaching safety after a 61-58 win at Moncalieri.  Lucca continued to be a threat to the teams with more heralded rosters as they won 65-59 over Bologna to end the day.

The last game from Round 16 was played on Wednesday with Shae Kelley nearly helping San Martino di Lupari pulling off an upset, but Venezia left with a 72-67 win.  Round 19 was then completed on Thursday with Laura Spreafico pacing Costa Masnaga in a 72-57 win over Moncalieri.  A couple of games had to move to accommodate continental play, but this round did start with a 76-70 Faenza win over Empoli on Saturday.  On Sunday, Maggie Lucas tried to lead Sassari again, but it was not enough and they lost to Moncalieri 70-68.  Ragusa was too shorthanded to put up much of a fight against Bologna, losing 84-57.  San Martino di Lupari won 76-54 over Broni in the only game scheduled at the traditional time.  The day ended with a 63-48 Lucca win over Sesto San Giovanni.

A pair of games were made up on Wednesday before this round was played on Saturday.  Jessica Shepard led Sassari past Campobasso 76-62 in a Round 17 game.  Rosa Cupido helped Faenza edge Broni 68-63 in a Round 16 game.  The games in this round that were scheduled for Saturday were all played.  The Maggie Lucas-Jessica Shepard combination was not enough for Sassari this time as Bologna won 95-91 in their first game in nearly a month.  It was an easy 87-57 win for Venezia over Faenza.  It had also been a long layoff for Ragusa and they hoped that it would mean a full strength roster when they returned to action, but that was not the case in a tough 77-41 loss to Schio.  Nina Premasunac and Campobasso defeated Broni 78-52 among the late games.  Blake Dietrick and Lucca controlled the second half in a 78-76 win over Amalia Rembiszewska and Empoli.  There was overtime to end the day as San Martino di Lupari eventually overcame Sesto San Giovanni 69-61.
