A pair of games in this round were played on Saturday, including Britta Worms and Tatiana Tenorio leading Dusseldorf to a 79-74 overtime win over Heidelberg.  Wasserburg continued their struggles with a 67-55 loss at Herner.  Positive test results at Marburg meant that they could not travel for their game against Halle, but the rest of Sunday’s games were played.  Kelly Moten and Hannover won 89-86 at Keltern.  The magical start for Shiori Yasuma and Freiburg ended in double-overtime against Osnabruck as they fell 95-86.  Taylor Wurtz led Rheinland past Anissa Pounds and Donau-Ries 81-75.  Addison Richards paced Saarlouis in a 72-60 win over Morgan Pullins and Gottingen.

This round started on Saturday with a 76-55 Freiburg win over Barbora Kasparkova and Halle.  On Sunday, Shambria Washington made her professional debut for Heidelberg, but they lost to Marburg 59-54.  A battle of winless teams saw Wasserburg finally get off the mark 83-71 over Freiburg.  Kelly Moten led Hannover past Dusseldorf 78-59.  Jill Townsend paced Osnabruck in a 78-73 win over Sami Hill and Donau-Ries.  A great start turned into a message to the rest of the league as Rheinland rolled to a 97-75 win behind Brianna Rollerson and Taylor Wurtz and are now looking to do what Keltern did after promotion and move right into chasing a championship.

German League Round 1 September 25th-26th

October 12, 2021 by Andrew

The league expanded to 14 teams this year with a plan to relegate 4 teams so teams were looking for a good start on opening weekend.  A new season also meant adjustments to the statistics system and the occasional hiccups.  Osnabruck won 73-65 in overtime at Wasserburg, which got professional debuts from Sarah Mortensen and Mikayla Williams, but full statistics are still not available.  Marie Reichert and Kristyna Brabencova made their professional debuts for Gottingen in an 82-67 win over Esther Fokke and Heidelberg.  An excellent game saw Keltern edge Alexandra Wilke 71-70 as both teams figure to contend for the championship.  Japanese players going abroad is rare, but Shiori Yasuma made a big first impression by firing Freiburg past Dusseldorf 84-70 to welcome the visitors to the top division.  On Sunday, Elina Koskimies and Donau-Ries edged Herner 68-67.  Kelly Moten led Hannover past Saarlouis 73-68.  Rheinland has a rather ambitious and experienced roster as league newcomers and Joyce Cousseins-Smith helped get a great start with an 87-52 win over Halle.

The league has been figuring out its new statistics system so information for this round is available before the first round of games.  The traditional weekday round started with a game on Thursday as Haliegh Reinoehl and Aliyah Mazyck had good games for Wasserburg, but it was not enough against Keltern in a 93-85 loss.  On Friday, Hannover beat Marburg 75-54.  Marie Reichert led Gottingen past Halle 74-58.  Shiori Yasuma was impressive, but Pauline Mayer and Hannah Little also had big games for Freiburg in an 86-75 win over Saarlouis.  Taylor Wurtz helped Rheinland win again, this time 87-65 over Osnabruck.  Donau-Ries beat Heidelberg 79-58.  Kita Waller led Dusseldorf again, but they fell to Herner 68-62

The battle for the bronze medal was originally supposed to follow the traditional home and home format on Thursday and Saturday, but Herner’s injury situation left all parties agreeing that them giving up their home game and using one game at Marburg instead of a series was the better plan.  The result went about as expected with the hosts doubling up a Herner team that was only able to play six players 82-41.
