November 14, 2019

Qualifying began on Thursday for the tournament in 2021.  Teams are looking to grab the fourteen spots alongside France and Spain.  The top team in each group will qualify along with the five best runners up.

Group A:

The early advantage in this group went to Slovenia after they edged a young Greece team 70-64 in Celje.  Hristina Ivanova and Bulgaria started strong with an 84-69 win over Iceland in Reykjavik.

Group C:

Russia went through their latest drastic overhaul, but were considered runaway group favorites before the first game in Orenburg.  They had a rather inauspicious start as Jonquel Jones did complete her change of national team to be the naturalized player for Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading them to a 70-69 upset win.  Merike Anderson paces Estonia again, but it was Switzerland that prevailed 73-63 at home in Fribourg.

Group E:

This group could be a tough test for the top three teams and it was certainly an excellent game in Belgrade as Serbia just held off Turkey 59-56.  The only drama in Kedainiai was whether a young star would get to shine, but Monika Grigalauskyte and Lithuania focused on taking care of business in a 108-43 pasting of Albania.

Olympic Qualifying Places:

The first two games on Saturday were that ones that would determine the last two teams to keep their Olympic dreams alive.  Hungary did start well as they were looking for a surprise, but Belgium clamped down on their way to a 72-56 win to claim one spot.  The other game was much closer throughout and it was Sweden that prevailed in the end 57-52 leaving Russia searching for answers for another cycle.

Semifinals:

With the Olympic situation settled, it was time for the quest for the championship.  Great Britain was looking for the upset and had the early lead as the game hit the half tied, but Marine Johannes emerged and helped France win 63-56.  Spain knew that it was best for them to keep the home crowd quiet and they managed to do that with a lead for most of the game, but Serbia kept it close and then surged late in the game, but lost the lead again and fell 71-66.

EuroBasket Quarterfinals July 4th

July 4, 2019 by Andrew

July 4, 2019

All four quarterfinals were played on Thursday with the winners also grabbing four of the six available spots in Olympic qualifying.  First up were the two teams not heavily predicted to reach this stage as Hungary tried to battle back late, but Temi Fagbenle could not be contained as Great Britain won 62-59.  It was much less close in the next game as Astou Ndour led Spain past Russia 78-54.  The most anticipated game was as good as advertised, going back and forth in the second half and resulting in overtime where Sandrine Gruda proved to much to handle and France won 84-80 as Emma Meesseman and Belgium just could not keep up late.  Serbia made the home fans happy quickly on their way to an 87-49 win over Sweden.  The teams will get another day of rest and then the semifinals and the last two games for the last Olympic qualifying places will be played on Saturday.

EuroBasket Playoff Games July 1st-2nd

The first two knockout round games were played on Monday to give the Riga-based teams time to travel to Serbia.  Frida Eldebrink and Sweden used a fast start to leave Latvia at home 77-62.  Great Britain also started well, but Montenegro did close the gap before the duo of Temi Fagbenle and Karlie Samuelson proved to be too much and got them the 92-71 win.  Tuesday’s games were the first in Belgrade, which also hosts the rest of the tournament.  The first game was excellent as Slovenia looked to pull off the upset, but Julie Allemand took on a bigger scoring role than usual for Belgium and helped them escape with a 72-67 win.  Cecilia Zandalasini and Italy had the early advantage, but Russia gathered itself in the second half on their way to a 63-54 win.  The teams will now all be well rested for the all-important quarterfinals games on Thursday with automatic spots in the next phase of Olympic qualification on the line.

All groups finished play on Sunday.

Group A:

The day started with an elimination as Temi Fagbenle and Great Britain tossed out Alina Iagupova and Ukraine 68-54.  The picture was looking rather clear early, but Latvia surged late to make everyone pull out the calculators before Spain held on to a 59-56 win.
