February 12, 2022

There were two games scheduled for Saturday, but Perth was unable to field a team due to absences related to the international break and injuries among their remaining players so their game against Bendigo was postponed.  The team does now get to return home after a long time away, but scheduling remains a concern for the rest of the season.  In the game that was played, Lauren Nicholson led Townsville past Keely Froling and Sydney 84-63.

Australian League Round 10 February 5th-6th

All the teams played a game over the weekend, but with national team players already preparing for their tournament, there were unexpected contributors leading their teams.  Anneli Maley led Bendigo past Adelaide 74-62 in the first game on Saturday.  Alex Bunton looked strong in Canberra’s 94-69 win over Emilee Harmon and Southside.  Sydney did fill an import slot again, but lost to Monique Billings and Townsville 86-66.  It would have been a more fun game with both teams at full strength, but Jackie Young and Perth did prevail 76-71 in overtime against Melbourne.

A new round started on Tuesday with Shyla Heal and Lauren Mansfield firing Sydney past Bendigo, which was led by Megan McKay and Anneli Maley, 83-72.  On Thursday, Marina Mabrey and Perth continued their long tour with an 85-78 win over Southside.  On Friday, Canberra rolled past a Sydney team facing another roster change 86-54 in the battle of the Frolings.  The other game was much better as Monique Billings and Townsville forced overtime, but Alanna Smith and Adelaide recovered for a 73-65 win.  The Saturday game was in Ballarat with Jackie Young and Sami Whitcomb leading Perth past Bendigo 90-82.  On Sunday, it looked like Sydney was poised for a win, but Bec Cole and Southside completely dominated the fourth quarter to win 73-70.  Mikaela Ruef and Canberra had a strong second half in an 80-67 win over Adelaide.  The round ended with Ezi Magbegor powering Melbourne past Townsville 66-59.

Australian League Round 8 January 19th-23rd

January 23, 2022 by Andrew

After several weeks of difficulties in getting games played, a busy schedule this week started on Wednesday with Darcee Garbin and Perth firing away in the second half in a 102-73 win over Canberra.  On Thursday, Rennia Davis was able to make her professional debut, but Sydney lost to Adelaide 77-52.  Southside had to have both of their games postponed.  That left one game on Friday with Townsville winning 77-67 at Bendigo.  It looked like they were running out of steam early against Cayla George and Melbourne with a quick turnaround on Friday, but Lauren Nicholson helped them win again, this time 68-66.  Sunday started with Canberra’s 94-60 win over Bendigo.  The last game of the round saw Marina Mabrey catch fire for Perth to fuel a comeback 86-81 win over Sydney, which was got scoring from Lauren Mansfield and Rennia Davis.

Australian League Round 7 January 12th-17th

After the entirety of the last round was postponed, even the game hastily arranged to try to reduce the schedule for later in the season, a new set of games started on Wednesday.  It ended up making up for some of the lost time as the inside-outside combination of Lauren Scherf and Marina Mabrey helped Perth force overtime and then win 83-79 against Sara Blicavs and Southside.  It was Mabrina Mabrey again for Perth on Friday that helped them start fast on their way to an 88-69 win over Canberra.  Saturday’s game was between the city rivals and Melbourne fended off Southside 75-72.  The round ended with a good game on Monday with Perth having to host far away from home in Ballarat and Tiffany Mitchell and Melbourne did enough late to win 80-77.

Australian League Round 5 December 30th-January 2nd

January 2, 2022 by Andrew

A virus case for Sydney caused the postponement of their game with Bendigo on Wednesday.  That left the round starting on Thursday with Alanna Smith and Adelaide completely dominating the fourth quarter in a 65-53 win over Melbourne.  Kelsey Griffin and Canberra rolled to an easy 76-52 win at Townsville on Friday.  Perth finally got to play their first game on Sunday with the uncertain situation regarding travel between states creating scheduling caution.  They came out on fire behind Marina Mabrey, but Alanna Smith and Adelaide made a couple of key plays late to take the lead and just edge an 88-86 contest.

Australian League Round 4 December 22nd-23rd

A midweek round before the holiday featured two Wednesday games, starting with Ezi Magbegor and the rest of Melbourne’s starting lineup building a big lead that Shyla Heal and Sydney could not extinguish, falling short 83-77.  Canberra was embroiled in controversy, but it was the Brittney Sykes show for them to offset an absolutely fantastic game from Anneli Maley to get past Bendigo 100-88.  Monique Billings and Townsville looked to be securing a win on the road on Thursday, but Bec Cole and Southside fought their way back to win 86-81.

Melbourne started their season on Wednesday, but lost to Bendigo 63-58.  Two teams that did not play in the opening weekend started Saturday with Lauren Nicholson leading Townsville past Adelaide, which got an overseas debut from Kiana Williams, 70-59.  The city rivals squared off with Melbourne using the trio of Tiffany Mitchell, Lindsay Allen, and Tess Madgen to win 91-72 over Maddison Rocci and Southside.  Sunday’s game could not be played due to a Canberra player’s test result.

The season started this weekend with a pair of games as the traditional format returned instead of the Queensland hub used last season.  Saturday’s game saw Southside’s trio of Sara Blicavs, Bec Cole, and Abby Bishop lead them to a 94-83 win over Bendigo.  The other game was early Sunday and Stephanie Watts had a strong overseas debut for Sydney, but Canberra had the better of the second half to win 58-55 in a game that also featured a twin battle.
