It was a battle of two of the best players in the league, but Marie Ruzickova ended up as the leading scorer for Venezia as they beat Cagliari 77-38.  Jolene Anderson led Schio to an 84-67 win over Umbertide.  A battle among former Stanford players went to the team with two of them as Jillian Harmon led Lucca to a 75-49 win over Vigarano.  Jelena Ivezic led the way for Orvieto as their 74-70 win over San Martino meant that the week closed with only the top four teams above .500.  Yvonne Anderson and Torino sit just outside the playoffs after an 86-53 win over last place Sesto San Giovanni.  Parma won 67-60 at Napoli as both teams now occupy the last playoff places.  Ragusa is still in first place after Rebekkah Brunson led them to an 81-64 win over Battipaglia.

Spanish League Round 17

The round started on Friday with Conquero’s fearsome foreign frontcourt of Adaora Elonu, Haley Peters, and Talia Caldwell leading them to a 95-80 win over Promete.  On Saturday, Paola Ferrari and Zaragoza overcame Oumoul Sarr and Gipuzkoa 62-61 to stay in the playoff picture.  Cadi La Seu pulled into a tie with Gernika by beating them 71-60 with both teams likely to be the only possible interlopers into the playoffs.  Ewelina Kobryn and Avenida maintained their gap in first place after crushing Gran Canarai 99-66 despite Taysha Pye doing everything that she could.  On Sunday, a full strength Azkoitia with Marita Davydova firing on all cylinders left them no closer to their first win after a 78-49 loss to fellow newcomers CREF.  Girona created a gap for the last playoff spot with a 68-65 win over Zamarat.

Most of the games of the round were on Saturday as Jenny Fouasseau led Arras to a 67-63 win over Nice.  Marine Johannes and K.B. Sharp led Mondeville to an 80-66 win over Toulouse.  A day of big performances also included Carmen Guzman and Iva Sliskovic leading Landes to a 74-72 win over Alicia DeVaughn and Charleville.  Porsha Rports led Hainaut to a 72-57 win at Angers.  The most anticipated game of the day was the one for first place as Bourges grabbed the top spot with a 69-66 win at Lattes Montpellier and were further heartened by the return from injury of Shay Murphy.  Aija Putnina and Queralt Casas helped Nantes to a 95-64 win at Calais.  There was bonus basketball on Sunday as Lauren Ervin finally helped Lyon end the game in overtime 93-81 over Villeneuve.

On Saturday, Fenerbahce maintained first place on their own despite the best efforts of Pelin Bilgic and Milica Jovanovic for Botas as they lost 75-65.  Abdullah Gul University ended their slide with a 79-69 win at Samsun although Zane Teilane had another strong game.  Katsiaryna Snytsina helped Hatay halt the momentum of Gelisterinler 87-69.  Galatsaray was the only home team to win as they kept Adana firmly rooted in last place 78-69.  On Sunday, Angel McCoughtry and Maria Kuzina led Mersin to a 74-66 win over Edirnespor.  Istanbul University withstood a strong effort from Tijana Krivacevic to win 87-80 over Orduspor.  The trio of Luca Ivankovic, Cappie Pondexter, and Sandra Ygueravide helped Besiktas move into the last playoff place with a 90-62 win over an increasingly desperate Yakin Dogu University side.

Group A:

A busy Wednesday continued to clear up the picture in the group.  Dynamo Kursk overcame a solid effort from Zuzana Zirkova and pulled away in the second half to beat Good Angels Kosice 64-53.  Fenerbahce continued to lead the group and virtually guaranteed itself the top spot as Jantel Lavender led them to a 69-52 win at Sopron.  Lynetta Kizer had a critical performance for Galatasaray as they fended off Villeneuve 66-62, making it likely that the current four teams at the top of the standings will be the ones moving on to the quarterfinals.  Avenida was the only home team to win, beating Schio 63-52 to give themselves a reasonable shot at the last EuroCup slot while creating a three way tie for second place.

WNBA Free Agency 2016; Washington Mystics

January 19, 2016 by admin

Our last team to cover in our WNBA Free Agency outlooks are the Washington Mystics. The Mystics have made a playoff appearance three years straight although each time they have been knocked out in the first round. They finished the 2015 season in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 18-16 and faced the top seed New York Liberty in the first round of the playoffs. In what was one of the most exciting series in the 2015 playoffs the Liberty won 2-1 and sent the Mystics home. Head coach Mike Thibault has really made his mark on this franchise when he took over in 2013 after leaving the Connecticut Sun. He is the all time winningest coach in the WNBA and has brought his winners mentality to a franchise that has struggled in that department. With a promising group of players the Mystics will again be in playoff contention next season.

There are only two free agents on the Mystics roster this year and they are both unrestricted. Kara Lawson and Latoya Pringle-Sanders will both be up for grabs this off season. Lawson who came to her hometown team after winning a championship with the Sacramento Monarchs and being a key player for the Connecticut Sun has battled injury since coming to Washington. This past season she missed a total of 12 games and the season before she sat out six. In what will be her 14th season in the WNBA if she decides to return, Kara Lawson brings leadership and experience. In addition, she is also a capable scorer where throughout most of her career she has averaged at least 40% shooting percentage from the three point line. I don’t see Lawson joining another franchise this offseason, if anything, she will finish her career a Washington Mystic.

The Mystics will also be making a decision on Latoya Pringle. Washington has had the rights to Pringle for several years but it wasn’t until the 2015 season that she decided to join the team. She’s actually only played four seasons in the WNBA after being drafted in 2008. In her first year with the Mystics she averaged 5 points and almost 7 rebounds in 18 minutes per game. Pringle has shown herself to be one of the best forward/centers in Europe where she holds a Turkish passport. She is a great shot blocker and has good moves around the basket. She is also capable of knocking down mid range shots. If the Mystics can lock her up I think they should definitely go for it. She only competed in 23 games last season for Washington and a full season with the team could make the difference.  Other teams will be after a player with her size and skill so there may be a bidding contest to sign her.

The Mystics have their inside covered with Dolson and Messeman holding down the block. With nothing lost when Kia Vaughn enters the game. Natasha Cloud, who was a rookie last season, started 22 games for the Mystics. Tayler Hill who returned from giving birth to her son the previous season will have to step up this season and make her mark on this team and the league. Bria Hartley, who struggled with an injury for part of the season where she missed 9 games will return healthy and ready to compete for a spot in the starting lineup. Those players in addition to the Latta should again compete for a Eastern Conference Championship however I think Washington needs to add a piece or two that can complement what they already have on the roster. What do you think Washington needs to do to improve from last season? Do they have what it takes? Will they sign a free agent this off season? Let us know.
