The knockout round started on Monday with teams looking for spots in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.  Frida Eldebrink and Sweden had an upset on their minds early in Spain and Italy could not find any balance and lost 64-46.  In France, Croatia was looking to also strike as third-place team and Ivana Dojkic helped them lead at halftime, but Jonquel Jones and Bosnia and Herzegovina had the better of the second half to win 80-69.  Also in Strasbourg, Elizaveta Komarova was hitting from the outside early for Russia, which rolled to a 93-75 win over Shante Evans and Slovenia.  Spain was not expected to be in this position, but took care of business in Valencia with a 78-51 win over Montenegro.

With only the championship left on the minds of the teams, the semifinals were played on Friday.  Brazil’s height and experience stifled the United States early, but the younger team surged out of halftime to take the lead on their way to a 71-60 win.  Puerto Rico had a good start in front of the home fans in the second game, but Canada tied it by the break, leading to an excellent second half where the hosts built a lead and then held it in dramatic fashion late to win 65-61.

The tournament started on Friday in this group with a game projected to be important for placement among teams expected to qualify for the next round.  It was Colombia that had the advantage after the opener with a solid 72-60 win over the US Virgin Islands.  Thayna Silva and Brazil rolled past El Salvador 118-43

Group B:

The big story before the tournament was the news that Argentina had positive virus tests on arrival, leaving them without three of their most influential players.  They fought hard without them and beat the Dominican Republic 64-46.  Hosts Puerto Rico closed out the day in San Juan and breezed to an 88-50 win over a Venezuela team that did not have all of the players available that they wanted.

The draw for the upcoming AmeriCup was conducted on Saturday in Puerto Rico’s host city of San Juan.  The ten teams were drawn into two groups as the top four teams in the tournament will advance to the next round of world championship qualifying.

With the South American Championship unable to be played, the top four ranked teams in the region, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, and Venezuela joined the four teams from Centrobasket and the two teams in the North America region to complete the field.  The teams will play their four group stage games over five days from the 11th through the 15th.  The bottom team in each group will be eliminated at that time with the all-important quarterfinals being played on June 17th.  The rest of the knockout stage will be played on the 18th and 19th.  El Salvador is happy to have gotten the final place in the qualification process, but will face an uphill task in upsetting any of the other Group A teams with Canada and Brazil figuring to fight for the top two spots and Colombia and the US Virgin Islands expecting the quarterfinals.  Group B offers a number of intriguing contests with all teams believing that they can play themselves into a good matchup to quality.  The team of current college players that the United States will send will be watched closely.  Puerto Rico has made big strides since the last tournament that they also hosted and will be tough as they will face their big rivals the Dominican Republic.  Venezuela will be looking to make a splash after missing out on the last tournament and Argentina will be bringing a tough team.
