Qualifying started on Thursday across ten groups as fourteen teams look to join hosts Slovenia and Israel in two summers.  In order to get the hosts more competitive games, they will participate in these games, but still automatically qualify.

Group A:

North Macedonia may have had the lead at halftime in Halle, but Germany controlled the second half to win 73-41.  The performance of the day came in this group in Sarajevo as Jonquel Jones was utterly unstoppable in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s 87-81 win over Belgium as both teams will be expecting to advance even with a new coach for the visitors.

Group C:

This group started with a game in Bucharest as Romania eventually did enough late for a 65-59 home win over Iceland.  Spain had a new coaching team on board and got quite the challenge off the bat from Bernadett Hatar and Hungary in Szekszard before leaving with a 66-62 win.

The elimination stage started on Wednesday with the winners moving on to Friday’s semifinals and the losers playing the consolation game before ending their tournament.  Kazakhstan had found themselves challenged by teams with rising ambitions, but Tamara Yagodkina helped them get their first win 87-69 over Cedra Sulaiman and Syria for a rematch against Jordan.  Indonesia built a solid lead heading into halftime, but Iran kept it close in the second half before losing 78-68 to set up a game against Lebanon for Indonesia.

The last day of group play was on Tuesday with both automatic semifinal places on the line.  In Group A, the situation was simple with the winner taking the top spot and it was Rebecca Akl who led Lebanon past Syria 83-63.  A Jordan win in the other group would avoid the need for tiebreakers and the hosts rolled past Kazakhstan 72-51.  The group winners get an extra day of rest before playing on Friday while the rest of the teams will play on Wednesday when the elimination games start.

Group play continued on Monday with the last two teams making their debut.  Syria naturalized Randi Brown before the tournament and she proved to be the key in their 78-71 win over Iran.  They will play Lebanon on Tuesday for the direct spot in the semifinals while Iran knows that they will have the longer path to promotion.  Naturalized players were also at the center of the Group B game as hosts Jordan made the biggest splash and won their opener 76-64.  Indonesia could have clinched the semifinal spot with a win or helped themselves in a potential tiebreaker situation if they could have kept the game closer.

November 7, 2021

The second division in Asia started their tournament on Sunday in Amman, Jordan with six teams looking for the trophy and a spot in the next Division A tournament.  Group A started play as the top team in each group will qualify for the semifinals.  There was a lot of curiosity about what kind of team that Iran would be able to field in their return to this stage and early returns are promising for them to offer a challenge as Lebanon did just enough in the second half to win 66-64.  Indonesia is attempting to increase their profile in international basketball and part of that was naturalizing a player for this tournament.  It paid off immediately as Kim Pierre-Louis led them alongside Henny Sutjiono to a 79-69 win over Zalina Kurazova and Kazakhstan, which would have been considered a tournament favorite before teams unveiled their new rosters.
