Semifinals:

Both series started on Friday as there was an air of mystery about how the games would go.  Maria Vadeeva could not be stopped and Ekaterinburg slowed down Nika’s stars to win 77-70.  MBA has not had to deal with the same scale of roster changes as other teams and Zhosselina Maiga helped them dominate the last quarter in a 75-67 win over Dynamo Kursk.  Each series will now shift venues for the next games on Tuesday.

The consolation bracket also started play on Friday and Nadezhda rolled to a 78-49 win over Dynamo Novosibirsk in Orenburg.  Spartak Moscow also used a fast start to win 77-62 over Enisey in Vidnoje.  The format is 1-2 in these series so home teams will be looking to sweep starting Tuesday to advance.

The last games of the regular season were played even without all games being made up.  Empoli’s solid run since being promoted to this level ended with a 95-66 loss to Ruthy Hebard and Ragusa.  Lucca is not back at full strength, but got a 64-56 win to secure homecourt advantage in the first round of the playoffs as Faenza was also trying to climb a spot in the standings.  The season is over for Ivana Raca and Sesto San Giovanni as they finished in the spot that is too low for the playoffs and too high for the playout after an 82-51 win over Sassari.  Lisa Jablonowski led Costa Masnaga past Broni 74-69.  Shae Kelley and Chelsea Mitchell had good games for San Martino di Lupari, which heads into the playoffs after a 74-67 win over Campobasso.  A game that had no seeding implications saw Schio win 64-54 at Bologna.

Russia was finally able to make their debut in the tournament on Sunday in the Dominican Republic, although they had something quite different than their hoped for roster.  Belgium ended their tournament on a winning note behind Emma Meesseman 66-43.  That left the situation pretty clear for Monday’s game with the winner taking the last spot on the world stage.  There was not much drama in that game as Raisa Musina and Russia took the lead early on their way to a 102-68 win over Jazmon Gwathmey and company.

World Cup Qualifying Tournament Osaka February 10th-13th

The news before the tournament that Belarus would not be able to make the trip due to a virus outbreak left the other three teams qualifying automatically, but still playing each other.  The first game on Thursday still had plenty of excitement as Canada had a big lead at halftime, but hosts Japan roared back to force overtime and then win 86-79.  Canada recovered on Saturday with Bridget Carleton and Natalie Achonwa leading them to a big 96-64 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The last game on Sunday also had its fun with Jonquel Jones at her best to help Bosnia and Herzegovina finish an 87-82 comeback win over Saki Hayashi and Japan.

Group B:

February 11, 2022

The second games in Belgrade were spread out over two days with this group playing on Friday.  China looked strong again as Li Yueru led them past Mali 84-64.  While the start was not ideal for Nigeria, they controlled the rest of the game for a 67-65 win over France.  China qualified by picking up a second win and France qualifies regardless of what happens in their game on Sunday as they would come out on top in the event of a tiebreaker.  Mali needs a win to avoid elimination and Nigeria will want to win to avoid having their fate determined by the other two teams in the group.

Games in this group continued on Saturday and the first one was excellent with the presumption that it would be the key game for qualification.  Scoring picked up in the final quarter as the teams went back and forth and it was Kang Lee-Seul’s range and Park Ji-Su’s triple-double that got them past Brazil 76-74.  After trailing narrowly for a large portion of the game, Serbia rallied in the fourth quarter for a 78-71 win over Australia behind Yvonne Anderson to help them and South Korea qualify.

Group A:

Since there were not enough willing hosts, Belgrade welcomed two different groups.  Australia automatically qualifies since they are hosting the main tournament, but still played and started Thursday with a 65-52 win over Brazil.  The last game of the day was also in this group and ended up being the best opener as Serbia fended off one final late charge from South Korea to win 65-62 at home.

With the chaos in other groups and format of the tournaments, this group is the only one that has a semblance of normalcy as the top three teams will qualify.  China used a fast start to roll past Nigeria 90-76.  Sika Kone made an impression on everyone as she was given a higher level responsibility by Mali and they kept it close all game long before losing to France 77-66.

2022 World Cup Qualifying Draw

November 23, 2021 by Andrew

After the host cities were announced last week, the draw was conducted on Tuesday for the four qualifying groups that will play in February to determine the rest of the field for the main tournament in Australia in September.

Australia qualifies as hosts and the United States qualifies as Olympic champions, but both will still play in these tournaments.  The top two teams besides them in their groups will qualify while the top three teams in the other groups will qualify.  Belgrade will host two tournaments with hosts Serbia welcoming Australia along with Brazil and South Korea, whose game figures to be critical for the third spot in the group.  The other group there features France and China.  Nigeria and Mali were drawn in the group as well with the two African teams automatically being placed together so that each region has representation in the final tournament.  Japan will host a group in Osaka and will host a Canada team in transition while the two surprise European teams from Eurobasket, Belarus and Bosnia and Herzegovina, were also drawn there.  In the Washington, D.C. group, Puerto Rico faces a very tough task even if they might have a mild geographical advantage as the United States will take one spot and Belgium and Russia figure to join them.

Chinese League Round 1 November 14th-16th

November 16, 2021 by Andrew

The season started on Sunday under roughly the same format that was employed last season.  Financial issues that were present last season only got worse as talent consolidation continued, even with an influx of players from the disbanded military team.  In the first game, that was evident as Han Xu made her way to Sichuan, which is hosting right now, and they rolled past Jiangsu 86-66 despite a great game from Luo Xinyu.

Monday’s first game was an interesting matchup as part of the process of getting back up to 18 teams involved forming a team of all stars from the teams in the Chinese University Basketball Association, which has a history of producing some solid players.  Their first game was a tough assignment against Inner Mongolia and they lost 97-47.  Xinjiang may not be considered a title favorite anymore, but had a solid 95-50 win over Tianjin.  Tian Yangyang had a good game for Heilongjiang, but Hubei rolled to a 116-69 win after an even first quarter.

Tuesday started with Shanxi winning 77-65 over Hebei.  Beijing beat Fujian 79-50.  Liaoning fielded a team in the league again after an absence and Hu Yueming had a good game for them, but Dong Keer and Dan Wanli helped Zhejiang win 93-70.  The last game of the round was a good one as Shandong figures to make a strong move up the standings this season with some big name players returning after playing elsewhere.  Wang Siyu had a strong game back with the team and Yang Hengyu was also strong as they opened with an 87-83 win over Yang Shuyu and Guangdong.  With each round now being played over two days with no breaks over the 17 games, many teams will be trying to contend with little rest in this condensed format.
