EuroLeague Round 1 October 16th-17th

Group A:

A new season started on Wednesday.  TTT Riga is not likely to sneak up on anyone this season after their run in the last campaign and they had major roster changes, but started well against a USK Praha team that knew that they would have to play at full strength to leave with the 73-66 win, suiting up Alyssa Thomas and Brionna Jones less than a week after they were in the WNBA Finals.  Reyer barely made it through the qualifiers, but hit the ground running with a 73-63 win over Bourges.  Braine had the tough task of hosting Ekaterinburg, but did keep the scoreline respectable in an 87-79 loss as the post duo of Maria Vadeeva and Brittney Griner led the visitors.  The lone Thursday game saw Nadezhda beat Cukurova 69-53 as they look to stay in the competition longer this season.

This group’s first game on Wednesday was an excellent test for both teams as Dynamo Kursk hosted ambitious Lyon, winning 79-64 to show that their pedigree should be respected even with roster changes.  Fenerbahce made drastic changes in the offseason and started with a 86-82 win at home behind Alina Iagupova and Cecilia Zandalasini over Magali Mendy and Girona.  Lattes Montpellier wanted to show that they are making a return to their glory days, but lost 66-53 to Sopron at home.  The round ended on Thursday with a close game that almost saw Gdynia escape with a win only for Schio to bear down at the end and win 51-47.

Group A:

Simultaneous action in this group was dramatic on Wednesday with spots still left up for grabs.  Temi Fagbenle and Polkowice that a win would clinch the last quarterfinals place, but Marija Rezan and USK Praha came back to win 79-74 as it was clear by the end of the game that the other results would favor the home team.  Ekaterinburg took care of Castors Braine 95-69 with neither team having much on the line.  Villeneuve also knew that a win would help secure the last spot in the EuroCup quarterfinals, but fellow French team Bourges did not offer a helping hand and won 78-74.  Schio knew that they would need a win and help and handled their end with an 82-50 pasting of Nadezhda, which spectacularly failed to even compete for the quarterfinals spot they could have won, leaving both teams in the EuroCup on vastly different trajectories.

All the games in this group were also on Wednesday.  Hatay’s collapse was complete after an 87-62 loss to Dynamo Kursk.  The teams in Riga had already advanced, but placement was on the line as Candice Dupree and Sopron won, which would ultimately leave TTT in the dreaded fourth position with the toughest quarterfinals matchup by far.  Charleville knew that they would need a win and help to grab the last EuroCup spot.  After getting the help from the group leaders, they forced overtime against Fenerbahce, prevailing 94-92 behind Haley Peters again.  The visitors were led by Kelsey Plum and Kia Vaughn and dropped to third with the result.  A meaningless game closed the day as Avenida beat Olympiacos 72-48.

Group A:

All games in this group were played on Wednesday.  Schio found themselves overmatched in Ekaterinburg, losing 77-46.  The game in Orenburg was going to go a long way in determining which team would take the final spot and it was as tense as expected as Stella Kaltsidou helped Polkowice escape Nadezhda with a 59-55 win to climb back above them in the standings.  Valeriane Ayayi and USK Praha took care of business and qualified with an 84-68 win over Villeneuve.  Alexia Chartereau and Bourges joined them with an 83-55 win over Castors Braine.

Group A:

All games in this group were played on Wednesday.  Nadezhda rolled past Castors Braine 85-56 in Orenburg to start the day.  Polkowice breezed past Magali Mendy and Villeneuve 86-66.  The shock of the day came when Alyssa Thomas and USK Praha handed Brittney Griner and Ekaterinburg their first loss 82-73 as a new signing gives the hosts an edge in their quest for second.  Schio continued to fight for the last parachute spot, beating Alexia Chartereau and Bourges 75-70.

Group B:

The round started on Tuesday in Greece with Olympiacos experiencing more hard luck after Hatay came back and escaped with an 80-76 win.  On Wednesday, the titanic matchup between the top two teams lived up to the hype as it went back and forth before Breanna Stewart and Dynamo Kursk came back and kept their perfect record with a 75-71 win over Bria Hartley and Fenerbahce.  Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis could not be stopped from the outside and Haley Peters was excellent again as Charleville fired past Shey Peddy and TTT Riga 100-75.  On Thursday, Avenida shuffled their lineup and just managed to fend off a late charge from Sopron to win 68-66 as the middle of this group continues to have twists and turns.

EuroLeague Round 10 January 23rd-24th

January 24, 2019 by Andrew

Group A:

The round started on Wednesday out in Ekaterinburg with the hosts stopping some of Nadezhda’s momentum 77-52 and clinching a spot in the next round.  The race behind them is tight as Alexia Chartereau led Bourges past USK Praha 81-70.  Castors Braine had a good start, but Polkowice controlled the rest of the game to win 94-71.  On Thursday, Schio figured that it had momentum and got a good game from Jantel Lavender, but Villeneuve escaped with an 81-75 and kept itself in contention and created a gap as they still have the lead for the parachute into EuroCup.
