EuroLeague Makeup Games February 16th-18th

Group A:

The last two games of the regular season were played this week.  Nadezhda took care of business on Tuesday in Orenburg by doubling up Izmit 80-40.  After eliminating them, Nadezhda then needed the visitors to still be motivated enough to play spoiler on Thursday in Kursk.  Clarissa Dos Santos helped Izmit grab an early lead in that last game, but Alex Bentley and Dynamo Kursk ended up rolling on an 84-46 win to grab the last spot in the quarterfinals and a matchup with rivals Ekaterinburg.

This group finished play on Sunday with a game between eliminated teams.  Bourges did beat Landes 92-62 at home with the teams now ready to focus on domestic play again.

It was the same pattern for Izmit in this game in Salamanca as they ran out of steam late despite great games from Erica Wheeler and Milica Jovanovic in an 80-78 loss to Nadezhda.  Dynamo Kursk missed a golden chance to build a strong advantage for the other spot, losing to Katie Lou Samuelson and hosts Avenida 79-70.

Ekaterinburg tinkered around in the first game with their placement secure and Maria Vadeeva paced them in a 90-41 win over Riga.  Early in the next game, Girona looked ready to win the game outright and avoid calculations, but hosts Schio roared back behind Natalia Achonwa, flipping the tiebreakers back in their favor, but the game got close again and the visitors managed to lose by just 77-74 to advance by just a basket.

The first game in Salamanca followed the game pattern as Izmit’s first game as all group were in action on Thursday.  Erica Wheeler helped them build a lead early, but Dynamo Kursh did enough in the second half to win 65-61.  Avenida took no risks over their perfect record on their home floor, crushing Nadezhda 93-38.

Group D:

With more games to play, this group started play on Monday.  Galatasaray may have had issues with the start of their campaign, but still have a good chance of advancing and they took a big step towards that with an 89-63 win over Landes.  Sopron continued to control the group, beating Isabelle Yacoubou and Bourges 74-67.  On Tuesday when the rest of the group were in action, Galatasaray beat Landes again, this time 78-59.

This group is playing games in Salamanca.  Nadezhda had another upset on their minds, but Arike Ogunbowale and Dynamo Kursk pulled away late to win 86-62 and shift the advantage back in their direction.  Izmit wanted to make a splash after finally being able to play, but their first half caught the attention of Avenida and the hosts buckled down to prevent an upset as Katie Lou Samuelson, Tiffany Hayes, and Silvia Dominguez helped them win 101-80.

USK Praha is hosting the final games in this group.  Alice Kunek and Barbora Balintova continued to help Gdynia fight to play the role of spoiler, but there was still no win for them with Lyon prevailing 79-76.  Fenerbahce at full strength was impressive as Kayla McBride, Alina Iagupova, and Cecilia Zandalasini led them past the hosts 99-70 and into a qualification place with two games left to play.

EuroLeague Makeup Games December 15th-17th

To reduce the number of games that need to be played in the next window, Galatasaray traveled to Sopron for two games once they were able to pass protocol safely.  On Tuesday, the hosts got a 69-66 win.  The teams played again on Thursday and Sopron was able to repeat the feat with a 70-58 win to put themselves in a commanding position in the group.

The last game in Istanbul saw Tiffany Hayes lead Avenida again, this time past Dynamo Kursk 89-74 to hold the lead in a tough group.

The magic ran out at home for Kayla McBride and Fenerbahce as they lost to Lyon 84-70 with the visitors holding the tiebreaker for the top spot at the halfway point.  Alice Kunek had a good game for Gdynia, but Brionna Jones controlled the paint and Alyssa Thomas had a triple-double for USK Praha, which won 85-76.
