Chinese League Round 10 November 10th

This stage of the season is now complete in China.  In the South Division, the two division leaders won easily as Shanghai beat Henan 70-54 and Guangdong beat Shandong 79-63.  Jiangsu beat Bayi 66-57 in an important game for placement in the cross-divisional playoff.  In the North Division,  Shenyang beat Beijing 76-67 to move into the key second spot.  Xinjiang had a surprisingly tough time with Liaoning, but Tina Charles carried the team along for a 72-65 win.  Penny Taylor needed to be at her best as well in order to lead Shanxi to a 74-71 win over Heilongjiang so that her team could take the third spot.  Heilongjiang and Shandong finish this stage winless.

Australian League Round 5

The round started on Friday as Sydney looked to move to the top of the standings. They kept Canberra winless by taking the game between the university-sponsored teams 68-45.  On Saturday, Dandenong kept pace by beating Melbourne 75-69.  Gabrielle Richards had the weekend’s most impressive performance as Bendigo beat SEQ 84-79.  On Sunday, Sydney won again, this time 73-70 at Townsville.  SEQ kept pace with them after winning in Melbourne 78-63.  Perth kept pace and heaped further misery on Adelaide with a 65-52 win, making it a road team sweep in the final three games after home teams won all the earlier games.

Czech Republic Round 10

There was an extra game on Wednesday to finish Round 6 as Strakonice stayed winless after losing to Kara Trutnov.  Round 10 is one in which USK Praha is not participating.  They remain undefeated alongside Nymburk, which had a tricky game at Brno, but won.  Hradec Kralove beat Slavia Prague.  On Sunday, Julia Reisingerova had the strongest individual performance of the week in a Karlovy Vary win over VS Praha.  Kara Trutnov won at Ostrava and Valosun Brno won at Slovanka.

With one game left in this phase of the season, the picture is much more clear for the next round.  In the North Division, Beijing handed Xinjiang their first loss despite Tina Charles leading the round in scoring.  The other two teams looking to move on also won as Shenyang beat Heilongjiang and Shanxi beat Liaoning.  In the South Division, Jiangsu beat Shanghai to shake up the picture at the top.  Guangdong took advantage by beating Bayi to pull into a tie for first place.  Henan kept Shandong winless to round out the day.

Chinese League Round 8 November 5th

It is near the end of the first stage of league play and there were several key games in the race for divisional positioning.  All teams except the two military-affiliated teams now have a foreign player after Ashley Paris joined Shandong.  The big battle in the South Division was won by Shanghai 70-64 as Elizabeth Cambage and Yelena Leuchanka battled to a draw individually.  Bayi beat winless Shandong 93-88 to stay in third place.  In a battle of Chicago Sky teammates, Jessica Breland and Jiangsu beat Cheyenne Parker and Henan 94-83.  The big game in the North Division saw Xinjiang remain undefeated by beating Shanxi 76-62.  Tina Charles put in the strongest individual performance [Read more…]

chinese leagueOne team remains undefeated as Xinjiang took care of business at Shenyang with Wang Lili using a great shooting performance to be the leading non-foreign scorer in the round.  Penny Taylor took overall scoring honors for the day as Shanxi won a statement game against Beijing.  Also in the North Division, Liaoning kept Heilongjiang winless.  The two teams leading the South Division managed close wins as Guangdong beat Jiangsu and Shanghai had a tougher than expected time with winless Shandong.  Bayi beat Henan to stay in the top half of the division. WNBLThe weekend of games started in exciting fashion as SEQ beat Sydney 97-89 in overtime to ensure that they would end the weekend atop the standings.  Also on Friday, Bendigo won in Perth 73-67.  On Saturday, Townsville won at Dandenong 83-75 and Melbourne won 91-63 in Canberra to continue the trend of strong showings for the road teams.  On Sunday, Adelaide surprised Bendigo 76-68 to record their first win.  The round of games finished Monday as Melbourne beat Townsville 84-75 despite the second impressive performance of the week by Suzy Batkovic. Chinese League Round 6 October 31st

It is now past the midway point of the first portion of the season in China.  Xinjiang remains the only unbeaten team, keeping Heilongjiang winless 96-58. Beijing tries to keep pace in the North as they beat Liaoning 66-53.  Shanxi continues to await their star as they lost 59-56 to Shenyang.  In the South, the two teams at the top are still tied.  Guangdong beat Henan 81-66 and Elizabeth Cambage was the leading scorer of the round again as Shanghai beat Bayi 82-75.  Jiangsu kept Shandong winless with an 81-60 win.

EuroCup First Round Recap

eurocup1After a pair of qualifying games determined the last team to play in the group stage, the main portion of the competition started this week with games spread across Wednesday and Thursday.  The 32 teams were divided roughly geographically with 16 teams from the more eastern half of Europe split among Groups A through D.  Group E through H consisted of 16 teams from the more western half of Europe.  In this round, each teams plays a six game double round robin schedule.  The top two teams in each group will advance to the next round.

EuroLeague Third Round Recap

euroleage 2Games this week got a rare Tuesday start as Castors Braine built a big lead on their Spanish visitors in Belgium on their way to a 73-60 win.  Defending champions USK Praha are still trying to get their healthy full strength roster together as they were unable to win in Orenburg in Russia as Nadezhda held on by a 58-54 margin.  The team they beat in the final, UMMC Ekaterinburg, remains the only unbeaten team after they dominated the second half in Poland to win 88-52 over Wisla Krakow, which stays winless.  An exciting game in France closed Wednesday Group B action as Bourges needed overtime to overcome their visitors from Abdullah Gul University 63-57, earning their first win of the season and handing the Turkish team their first loss.

All of the Group A games were on Wednesday, starting in Russia, where an overwhelming performance by Nneka Ogwumike powered Dynamo Kursk past their Italian visitors 63-58.  It was also close in Slovakia as Good Angels Kosice welcomed Turkey’s Galatasaray and won 54-59.  Sopron built an early lead in Hungary, but Spain’s Avenida fought back and nearly completed a comeback before losing 73-67.  Fenerbahce made the trip from Turkey to France and trailed heading into the final quarter at Villeneuve before a huge run helped them to a 69-55 win to close out another exciting week of EuroLeague action as teams continue to fight for quarterfinal spots.
