In Novosibirsk, Miah-Marie Langlois led Dynamo-GUVD to an 80-65 win over Grishaeva and last place Dynamo Moscow.  Emma Meesseman helped win the battle inside as Spartak Moscow won 66-46 at Kazanochka. A tight game in Noginsk went to the hosts 55-53 over struggling Energia Ivanovo.  The most anticipated game of the round proved a disappointment as Nneka Ogwumike’s strong performance was not nearly enough for Dynamo Kursk as they lost 86-65 to Nadezhda in Orenburg.  Britney Jones and Chevakata won 76-70 at MBA to create some separation between the top teams and the ones in the middle that have escaped the bottom.  UMMC welcomed Enisey to Ekaterinburg and dispatched them 78-40 to stay unbeaten.

The round started on Friday with Cayla George dominating inside to lead Townsville to an 89-80 win over Sydney.  Kayla Standish helped Adelaide ease past Melbourne 70-47.  On Saturday, a key game for postseason positioning saw Steph Cumming and Dandenong beat Kelsey Griffin and Bendigo 82-74.  Sami Whicomb, Carley Mijovic, and Perth finished the weekend in first place as Melbourne was handed another loss 80-59. Great games from Renee Montgomery and Abby Bishop did not lead to a first win for Canberra as Leilani Mitchell and Kayla Standish led Adelaide to the 85-82 win.  Lauren Mansfield helped SEQ prevail 92-73 over Sydney as both teams sit right outside the last playoff place.

Many of the games from the round were played earlier, but the regular season concluded over the weekend.  On Saturday, Sepsi clinched the regular season with an 86-44 win over Alexandria.  On Sunday, neither team had much to play for, but Tabytha Wampler did lead Targoviste to the 71-66 win at Brasov as both teams tried their best.  Briana Wilson was the leading scorer, but it was Christassia Walter and Galati getting the 95-77 win over Timisoara.

Polish Cup Results

February 1, 2016 by Andrew

Poland uses a hybrid format for the cup, limiting the number of teams but still having a team from leagues below the top division.  The top four teams in the league at the cutoff point automatically qualified and were joined by the predetermined host team Lublin and the University of Warsaw from the second level.  The host and top team in the standings were given a bye into the semifinals.

Action started on Friday with Sleza Wroclaw beating the University of Warsaw 73-42 as new signing Marissa Kastanek gets into rhythm with the team.  Artego Bydgoszcz beat Polkowice 65-49 to also advance to the next round with Elzbieta Miedzik leading the way.

The semifinals were on Saturday.  Sharnee Zoll and Sleza Wroclaw took advantage of shorthanded Wisla Krakow to win 71-65.  Hosts Lublin were helped by home court advantage as they fought back in the fourth quarter to beat Artego Bydgoszcz 71-65 even though Maurita Reid and Darxia Morris had strong games.

The final game on Sunday was filled with storylines.  Sleza Wroclaw was looking to complete the difficult three wins in three days while hosts Lublin were looking to celebrate in front of the home fans.  The hosts took the early lead and that was enough for a 66-58 even though Sharnee Zoll had a great scoring game.  Leah Metcalf was named MVP. January 30, 2016

Between the end of the regular season and the start of the playoffs, the league conducted its all star game.  As is normally the case, the game is designed to showcase the domestic talent.  Three foreigners were selected as Cheyenne Parker represented the South and Maya Moore played for the North with Tina Charles also selected for the North but not playing in the game.  The two stars of Bayi ended up leading the South to victory as Sun Mengran and Sun Mengxin represented the military club well.  Ji Yanyan led the way for the North as Maya Moore was given an opportunity to try and lead the team back, but they ended up losing 108-97.

South vs. North 108-97 SOU Sun MR 25/10r Sun MX 21/11r Parker 7 NOR Ji 24 Moore 19/12r

It is a quick turnaround for all of the players now as the postseason begins.  The best of three quarterfinals are designed to fit in before the Lunar New Year and games will be held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.  The teams with homecourt advantage host the second and third games.  Here are the matchups with the team hosting the first game listed first: [Read more…]

The round started on Friday as Stephanie Madden may prove to be a key midseason addition for Keltern as she led them to an 83-74 win over Donau-Ries.  Osnabruck finally showed signs of life by shocking Halle 91-81.  Jasmine Thomas led the way in the win as they had to withstand another set of tremendous performances by Aliaksandra Tarasava and Kristen McCarthy.  Herner used an exceptionally balanced scoring effort to beat Freiburg 89-68.  Saarlouis stays in second place as Amanda Dowe led them to an 86-83 win over Finja Schaake and Marburg.  In a game that could be critical in determining who will exit the league, Oberhausen beat Chemnitz 65-54.  Wasserburg continues to roll through the league after a 76-65 win over Rotenburg, which only had 5 available players for the game.  Marlou De Kleijn and Soana Lucet were helped by a Shey Peddy triple-double while Margret Skuballa and Angela Rodriguez tried to carry the scoring load in the loss.

Group A:

Dynamo Kursk qualified for the quarterfinals and helped out the other teams by beating Villeneuve 66-49.  Galatasaray joins them as Lynetta Kizer and Nevriye Yilmaz led them to an 81-56 win over Sopron.  Avenida missed a chance to solidify their shot at a EuroCup place by falling victim to a comeback by Jantel Lavender and Fenerbahce 64-59.  The final spot was decided as Jolene Anderson helped Schio get going early against Good Angels Kosice, easing to an 89-63 win despite the best efforts of Crystal Langhorne.  While the top spot and the other three teams moving on have been decided, the three way tie for second place creates an interesting battle as teams fight for seeding.

eurocup1

The quarterfinals series all started on Thursday with the same format as the last round as teams who finished lower in the rankings hosted the first games.  Besiktas continues to show it was probably the difficulty of their group and the not the quality of their play that dropped them to the 16 seed as Luca Ivankovic led them to a 75-67 win over 8 seed Reyer Venezia.  The top remaining seed, Miskolc got the 69-64 win at 10 seed Nymburk, bringing a lead home as the 2 seed despite a strong game from Theairra Taylor.  Another upset minded team takes a lead into the second game as 11 seed Nantes Reze used a solid effort from Queralt Casas to beat 3 seed Spartak Moscow 60-57.  The battle of two French teams was gritty as 5 seed Landes does appear to be taking a commanding lead home with them after a 55-37 win at 13 seed Angers.  All of the series will be resolved next Thursday.
