Israeli League Second Stage Round 4 February 4th

February 5, 2016 by Andrew

The first game of the day saw Bnot Hertzeliya re-enter the picture as contenders as Jasmine Thomas led them to a 67-52 win over the Maccabi Ashdod team that had been capturing all of the attention.  Maccabi Ramat Hen quickly returned to winning ways 83-62 as Kayla Thornton led them again against full strength Ramat Hasharon.  A big effort from Shamela Hampton was not enough for ASA Jerusalem as Jennifer O’Neill turned in the round biggest scoring output for a Hapoel Rishon Le-Zion. They are still  integrating a new foreign player, Chiney Nwagbo, but managed to win 84-73.  The battle between the two teams at the bottom went to Elitzur Holon 80-61 as Jamierra Faulkner and Atonye Nyingifa continue to be one of the league’s best inside-outside duos, offsetting a good game from Jillian Robbins.

EuroCup Round of 8 Game 2

February 5, 2016 by Andrew

The Round of 8 was completed on Thursday.  In Italy, Reyer Venezia overturned the deficit from the first game to send the series into overtime, but it was Jelena Milovanovic and Cappie Pondexter that dominated the extra frame to win 64-62 in the game and 139-129 overall.  It was the second team that Besiktas upset as the 16 seed, now taking out the 1 and 8 seeds.  2 seed Miskolc made things less suspenseful as they dispatched 10 seed Nymburk 77-50, pushing the overall score to 146-114.  3 seed Spartak Moscow had a small deficit, but took care of business with ease at home as Emma Meesseman led them to an 82-64 win and an 139-124 overall score.  13 seed Angers did show some fight at 5 seed Landes, but they still lost the game 63-55 and the overall series 118-92 with Gunta Basko-Melnbarde leading the way.  The four teams now await the four teams dropping down from EuroLeague to determine the bracket for the rest of the competition. EuroLeague Round 13 Recap

February 3, 2016 by Andrew

With only two games to play, Wednesday was filled with action as teams fought for a small number of spots and qualified teams jockeyed for seeding position in the quarterfinals.

Group A

Nneka Ogwumike was the ringleader for Dynamo Kursk as they eased past last place and firmly eliminated Sopron 102-68.  More impressive was Schio’s 66-60 win at Fenerbahce, which also kept them in the hunt for second place.  It is not clear how much Fenerbahce was concerned about winning since they already clinched first place, but Jantel Lavender showed no signs of slowing down.  A game that only matters for the EuroCup places went overwhelmingly to Good Angels Kosice 78-48 as Villeneuve missed a big opportunity.  Galatasaray was led by Lynetta Kizer as they stayed in the big tie for second place with a 62-49 win at Avenida, which still fights for that last EuroCup spot.

In next week games, Good Angels Kosice can put themselves in good position simply by beating Sopron in Slovakia.  Galatasaray figures to get a test from rivals Fenerbahce as they try to gain positioning.  Villeneuve could be in trouble for staying in any competition if they lose to Schio in Italy.  Avenida will host Dynamo Kursk in the other game as they try to at least make the EuroCup while the visitors try to maintain second place.

Chinese League Quarterfinals Game 1

February 2, 2016 by Andrew

The playoffs started in China with the lower ranked teams hosting the first game of the quarterfinals.  Top seed Xinjiang had a tough battle from Liaoning, which was the last team to make the playoffs, but Tina Charles was just too much in the 79-75 win despite Kara Braxton holding her own inside.  Also on this side of the bracket, new look Guangdong drew a tough assignment, visiting military team Shenyang and just managing to escape in overtime 81-76.  Candace Parker made the most of her rules-limited minutes in her debut as Huang Sijing helped pick up the slack when she was not in the game.  Li Meng had the game’s strongest individual effort, but it came in the loss.  The battle between Minnesota Lynx teammates happened as Sylvia Fowles returned in time for Beijing to visit Shanxi.  While she found little resistance inside, it was Maya Moore returning to her playoff vintage best that helped the hosts to the 79-65 win and the early series advantage.  Bayi’s late season run moved them into place to face Shanghai in the quarterfinals and it resulted in a 93-66 first game loss.  Elizabeth Cambage was ruthlessly efficient offensively, scoring her 26 points on only 9 field goal attempts as her minutes were limited by rule due to facing a military team. Wei Yuchun provided additional offense in the win.

The last game from Round 2 was rescheduled for Wednesday and ASA Jerusalem beat Hapoel Petah Tikva 76-67. Shamela Hampton and Brianna Kiesel outdid Janae Smith and her team in the win.  A rare Sunday game saw Jasmine Thomas lead Bnot Hertzeliya to a 77-66 win over Asia Taylor and ASA Jerusalem.  The premier Monday matchup led to an 84-76 Maccabi Ashdod win over Maccabi Ramat Hen.  Alysha Clark led the way in the win as the team looks to have finalized their roster. Kayla Thornton continued her strong season in the loss finishing with 22 points and eight rebounds.  Atonye Nyingifa met no resistance from an Elitzur Holon side missing their star foreign player as Ramat Hasharon beat them 85-59.  A game between teams hovering at the bottom of the standings had Janae Smith lead Hapoeel Petah-Tikva to a 67-61 win over Ashley Shields and Hapoel Rishon Le-Zion.

On Saturday, Alyssa Thomas and Tiffany Hayes helped Yakin Dogu University pull out of a slump with an 86-65 win over Orduspor.  Courtney Vandersloot dominated the matchup at the point guard position to lead Gelistirenler to an 80-74 win over Abdullah Gul University despite the best efforts of LaToya Sanders.  Botas stayed in a playoff place as domestic league players helped them beat struggling Edirnespor 76-67.  On Sunday, Adana finally got the elusive win and gave themselves a chance to pull away from rock bottom as Shavonte Zellous led them in an 81-78 final even though Cappie Pondexter had another good game for Besiktas.  Fenerbahce is still the undisputed league leader as they beat Samsun 88-57.  The Atlanta Dream duo Angel McCoughtry and Aneika Henry were too much for Sasa Cado and Istanbul University as Mersin won 82-76.  The most anticipated game of the round closed the day and went into overtime as Hatay stays in second place with a 75-70 win over Galatasaray.  Natalie Hurst and Jewell Loyd each went the distance as they tried to will their teams to victory.

On Saturday, Charleville had a surprisingly easy time with Mondeville, doubling them up 96-48.  Lattes Montpellier is still well in contention for first place as Sarah Michel led them to an 81-69 win over Courtney Hurt and Nice.  Bourges remains tied with them after a 72-62 win over Lyon.  The best efforts of Marie-Bernadette Mbuyama-Tshimanga were not enough for Calais as they lost 62-49 to Hainaut and continue to hover perilously close to the bottom of the standings.  On Sunday, Nantes looked to keep themselves in a safe position as a balanced effort helped defeat Chatilla Van Grinsven and Arras 91-65.  Villeneuve continues to fight for those last playoff spots with a 69-54 win over Angers.  Landes is also in contention as Iva Sliskovic led them to a 67-43 win over Toulouse.

It was not a full weekend of games for the round as a game was moved to later in February.  On Saturday, Maria Pina and Haley Peters led the strong Conquero frontcourt as they beat Zamarat 77-72.  Avenida continues to beat up on the rest of the league after taking care of Zaragoza 76-56.  Girona stays firmly in the playoff places after a 62-55 win at Ferrol.  Gran Canaria pulled away from the danger zone again, beating Nina Bogicevic and CREF 76-65.  The other newcomer also lost as Nicole Romeo led Cadi La Seu to the latest dismantling of Azkoitia 89-48.  The lone Sunday game saw Gernika win 74-62 at Promete, leaving the hosts in a troubled place.

It was one of the rounds with less than a full slate of games as Maja Vucurovic opened action on Friday leading Zabiny Brno to a 63-45 win over Karlovy Vary.  On Saturday, Hradec Kralove looked to keep pace with the top of the league as they beat Kara Trutnov 67-56.  Edita Sujanova led Valosun Brno to an easy 92-53 win over suddenly struggling Slavia Praha. Sunday’s game went into overtime in Slovanka with VS Praha leaving with the 76-75 win as Ivana Brajkovic and Dragana Gobeljic did not get enough help.  A game between teams at opposite ends of the standings unsurprisingly went to Nymburk 98-62 over Strakonice.

Samantha Prahalis was utterly unstoppable as she dragged Cagliari to a 79-70 win over Orvieto, a result that could be critical at the end of the season.  San Martino made it five teams above .500 as they eased past last place Sesto San Giovanni 91-66.  Jillian Harmon helped Lucca into sole possession of first place with a 71-61 win over Battipaglia.  They are there because Ragusa was stunned 84-68 by Vigarano even though Rebekkah Brunson was dominant.  Amber Orrange may have had her best game so far in the win as they look to avoid the danger zone.  Parma beat Jenna Smith and Torino 82-56 as both teams fight for spots in the playoffs.  Meighan Simmons and Umbertide looked to take advantage of a Venezia team that is focused on another competition, but the visitors fought back to win 75-58.  The day closed with a tremendous effort from Cierra Burdick, but Isabelle Yacoubou and Schio still beat Napoli 72-61.
