The German League started play on Saturday. Herner will be hoping for a one-two punch of former Gonzaga players this season and early returns were good as Sonja Greinacher led them past Freiburg 72-66. Young Satou Sabally, who is fresh off of a commitment to Oregon, had a solid start to her season for the visitors. Bad Aibling was one of the two teams promoted to the division and they started off well at Rotenburg, winning 91-71 behind Jessica Hootmann. Marburg closed the day by beating Chemnitz 76-53.
Sunday’s first game was expected to be a good one with Saarlouis prevailing 88-72 over Keltern. Sabine Niedola was one of the best players in the league last season and got off to a good start while Kristi Mokube had an excellent professional debut. Halle edged Donau-Ries 67-66. Powerhouse Wasserburg closed the day, but they got an early challenge from league newcomers Hannover before winning 82-69. Melissa Jeltema had a great game for the visitors as they will look to build on the performance against other opponents to give themselves a chance at staying at the top level.
