Chinese League Round 1 November 14th-16th

The season started on Sunday under roughly the same format that was employed last season.  Financial issues that were present last season only got worse as talent consolidation continued, even with an influx of players from the disbanded military team.  In the first game, that was evident as Han Xu made her way to Sichuan, which is hosting right now, and they rolled past Jiangsu 86-66 despite a great game from Luo Xinyu.

Monday’s first game was an interesting matchup as part of the process of getting back up to 18 teams involved forming a team of all stars from the teams in the Chinese University Basketball Association, which has a history of producing some solid players.  Their first game was a tough assignment against Inner Mongolia and they lost 97-47.  Xinjiang may not be considered a title favorite anymore, but had a solid 95-50 win over Tianjin.  Tian Yangyang had a good game for Heilongjiang, but Hubei rolled to a 116-69 win after an even first quarter.

Tuesday started with Shanxi winning 77-65 over Hebei.  Beijing beat Fujian 79-50.  Liaoning fielded a team in the league again after an absence and Hu Yueming had a good game for them, but Dong Keer and Dan Wanli helped Zhejiang win 93-70.  The last game of the round was a good one as Shandong figures to make a strong move up the standings this season with some big name players returning after playing elsewhere.  Wang Siyu had a strong game back with the team and Yang Hengyu was also strong as they opened with an 87-83 win over Yang Shuyu and Guangdong.  With each round now being played over two days with no breaks over the 17 games, many teams will be trying to contend with little rest in this condensed format.
