EuroCup Round 1 October 13th-14th

Games started in the regular season this week with the old home and away format returning.  The top two teams in each group will advance along with four of the six third place teams from the two conferences as Groups A through F are considered the eastern conference and Groups G through L are considered the western conference.

Group A:

October 17, 2021

Both games in this group were on Thursday, starting with fantastic games from Kalani Brown and Aaryn Ellenberg-Wiley to lead Hatay past Enisey 100-76.  Panathinaikos was looking to make a splash after an impressive league championship last season and Angeliki Vintsilaiou had a good game in their opener, but Polkowice left with a 67-64 win.

Group B:

This group began play on Wednesday with one game as Aari McDonald had a big game for Gyor, but they lost to Elazig 74-67.  After their ambitions were not met last season, Prometey showcased a strong team on Thursday with Ariel Atkins leading them past Brianna Fraser and Sepsi 86-64.

Both games in this group were played on Thursday, including a battle of Polish teams that saw Martina Fassina lead Lublin past Courtney Hurt and Gorzow 79-59.  Since Cukurova started announcing their signings, there was a lot of anticipation about how strong they could be.  They do not have everyone yet, but Shavonte Zellous paced them in their opening 78-55 win in Minsk against Horizont.

Group D:

This group began with a good game on Wednesday after Ramla worked on correcting roster construction issues last season and rolled out a strong roster that is legal both here and in domestic league play.  It worked as designed with Kelsey Mitchell and Emma Cannon leading the way, but Nora Wentzel and PEAC still got the 90-83 win at home.  The two Turkish teams squared off on Thursday with Nesibe easing past Brooque Williams and Kayseri 84-57.

Group E:

The first regular season game was in this group on Wednesday and after a surprising result to end last season, there were questions about how Olympiacos would look this campaign and it started fantastically with a 103-68 pasting of Bydgoszcz.  On Thursday, Crvena zvezda, commonly known as Red Star in English language use, hosted a Nadezhda Orenburg team with more tradition in continental play and played well, but the visitors left with a 92-76 win behind Markeisha Gatling and Adaora Elonu.

Group F:

This group started with a battle of Hungarian clubs on Wednesday and Cheridene Green helped DVTK completely control the fourth quarter to leave Csata with a 67-52 win.  On Thursday, Orman only brought eight players to Syktyvkar, but Danielle Robinson led them past Raisa Musina and Nika 76-74 despite a close shave late.

Group G:

The last game of Wednesday was in this group and Bourges left Tenerife with an 80-79 win despite the best efforts of Kaela Davis.  On Thursday, the trio of Marielle Giroud, Abigail Fogg, and Aleksandra Kroselj helped Fribourg start fast on their way to a 100-81 win over Jessica Shepard, Maggie Lucas, and Dinamo Sassari.

Group H:

This group may be one of the tougher ones ever assembled and it started on Wednesday with the two French teams squaring off and Roche had the early edge with a 68-64 win over Charleville.  Thursday was supposed to be a big opportunity for Virtus Bologna to announce themselves ready for this level of competition and Myisha Hines-Allen had a good game, but they fell to visiting Gernika 65-60.

Both games in this group were on Wednesday, starting with Ruzomberok coming back to beat Liege 72-69.  Lyon looked like they were finally going to be the team that they were designed to be in Madrid, but Laura Quevedo fired Estudiantes to a dramatic 70-67 comeback win.

Both games in this group were on Thursday, starting with Braine leaving Brno with a 75-58 win.  London Lions were without the player that led them in the qualifiers so it was Kennedy Leonard who stepped up as they completed a comeback for an 81-78 win over a Keltern team that cannot field its full domestic roster in this competition.
