The season started on Wednesday in South Mackay as games will be played in Queensland instead of home arenas. The first game was worth the wait as Steph Talbot and Adelaide were forced into overtime by Maddison Rocci and Canberra, but dominated the extra period to win 85-73 as Taylor Ortlepp made her professional debut with her home state team. Townsville gets to play in their home state and started with a 73-48 win over Perth. Courtney Woods made her professional debut in the win while Emma Clarke and Alex Sharp did so in the loss. The other four teams started play on Thursday with Townsville hosting game in Annandale. Tess Madgen led Melbourne past Sydney 85-70. There was anticipation for how Southside’s lineup would look and they crushed Bendigo 102-60 to end the day, although Alicia Froling did get to make her professional debut after a long delay.
