Spanish League Round 1 September 18th-20th

The season got off to an ominous start with both games scheduled for Friday postponed due to virus test results.  One of Saturday’s games could not be played either, but the rest were played as scheduled.  The first game saw Laura Garcia lead Gipuzkoa past a young Bembibre side 76-65.  The hosts handed professional debuts to Batouly Camara, Sara Rhine, Dee Givens, Lashann Higgs, Sara Rokkanen, Montserrat Brotons, and Marianne Kalin.  Valencia had the opportunity to get revenge on Gernika for their Super Cup loss last weekend and did so with a 64-52 win.  Avenida was not particularly inspiring in Lugo, but won 58-52.

Both scheduled games on Sunday were played, starting with the battle of the Canary Islands on Tenerife.  Clarinos welcomed Gran Canaria back to the top flight and it was a great game as it took two overtimes for Tanaya Atkinson lead them to a 103-102 win.  Kai James and Sparkle Taylor paced the visitors.  There was extra basketball to end the day too as Estudiantes had a promising start to life back in the upper tier, but Julia Reisingerova led Girona in a comeback for an 88-78 win.
