Both groups started play on Thursday as the teams fight for three spots alongside Japan in the next round.
Group A:
The first action in the new format came in Auckland and it was a great game as Park Ji-Su and Kim Jung-Eun helped South Korea fend off China 81-80. The other game was far less dramatic as hosts New Zealand eased past the Philippines 111-54.

Group B:
The other group played on neutral ground in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Australia coasted past Taiwan 84-51. Japan gets some valuable preparation time ahead of hosting the main tournament, but that might not have been accomplished when Kiho Miyashita led them past India 120-29.
