EuroBasket Playoff Games July 1st-2nd

The first two knockout round games were played on Monday to give the Riga-based teams time to travel to Serbia.  Frida Eldebrink and Sweden used a fast start to leave Latvia at home 77-62.  Great Britain also started well, but Montenegro did close the gap before the duo of Temi Fagbenle and Karlie Samuelson proved to be too much and got them the 92-71 win.  Tuesday’s games were the first in Belgrade, which also hosts the rest of the tournament.  The first game was excellent as Slovenia looked to pull off the upset, but Julie Allemand took on a bigger scoring role than usual for Belgium and helped them escape with a 72-67 win.  Cecilia Zandalasini and Italy had the early advantage, but Russia gathered itself in the second half on their way to a 63-54 win.  The teams will now all be well rested for the all-important quarterfinals games on Thursday with automatic spots in the next phase of Olympic qualification on the line.
