After a long break for the All Star Game and New Year’s celebrations, play resumed with all four series starting on Wednesday. Several teams made final moves over the break to try to get past this round. That included Shanxi, who brought in Courtney Paris, but Wu Tongtong’s excellent game was not enough against Nneka Ogwumike and top seeds Guangdong, who won 84-71. Shanghai had the tough task of facing Bayi and the rules advantages did not come into play as Li Meng and the hosts won 85-65. Bernice Mosby led Jiangsu past Shandong 77-65 as the team considered the most vulnerable among the top seeds looked good to start. The top seed that did lose was Xinjiang, which brought in Glory Johnson knowing that they would need more firepower, but a good game from Wang Lili was not enough after Tina Charles absolutely torched her former team to get Beijing the 79-75 win. The teams will play again on Friday in the same venues.
