The season started with all teams playing once during the opening weekend. The two university-sponsored teams played first on Friday and Kia Nurse had a big overseas debut as she teamed up with Lauren Scherf to lead Canberra past Alex Bunton and Sydney. Former college rivals made debuts on the teams as Brittany McPhee played for Perth and Penina Davison played for Adelaide as the visitors left with a 78-66 win with Ashley Taia making her national league debut after quickly playing regionally after her college career. The other Saturday game went to Marena Whittle and Bendigo as they beat Steph Talbot and Melbourne 82-72. Sunday’s game saw the completion of a sweep by the road teams as Dandenong beat Suzy Batkovic and Townsville 73-68.
