January 7, 2016
With free agency set to begin on January 15th there seems to be a lot of speculation that many changes are likely to occur. These are the feelings we all have almost every year at the start of Free Agency, but this year may be different. It all started with Elena Delle Donne making her desire to leave the Chicago Sky publicly known. More recently, after hearing trade rumors, Angel McCoughtry put that to rest when she released a statement that she would be taking the 2017 WNBA season because she has “played a continuous year-round schedule with no off-season…that has taken its toll both mentally and physically.” Players and their agents will be able to be in contact with teams beginning on the 15th but will not be able to sign contracts until the first of February.
- An RFA Restricted free agent can sign an offer sheet with any team, but the player’s original team can retain her by matching the terms of that offer. The original team is said to have the “right of first refusal.”
- An UFA Unrestricted free agent is free to sign with any team.

Alex Bentley (Connecticut Sun)
Kelsey Bone (Phoenix Mercury)
Layshia Clarendon (Atlanta Dream)
