Monday’s game was the last game of the first round of the Korean league. Winnus KDB who had only won one game thus far this round were taking on winless KEB Hana at home. KDB got off to a good start, taking an eight point lead into the half. Luckily they were able to build their lead during the first half because neither team was able to pull away in the second. Despite the best efforts of Natalie Achonwa who finished the game with a double double,  KDB’s balanced attack is what led to their victory. They are now tied with Shinhan Bank for 4th place with a 2-3 recond. The second round of the league begins on Wednesday as first placed Woori Bank takes on third placed KB Stars.

In their last game of the first round Shinhan Bank finally got their second win of the season. Although they didn’t get off to a great start against Samsung, Shinhan came out a different team in the second. They held Samsung to just six points in the entire second quarter! Shinhan took a 10 point lead into the half. In the second half Samsung was unable to make up their poor second quarter showing. Thomas led the way for Samsung with a double double but it wasn’t enough to win back to back games. Korean guard Kim Dambi for Shinhan was the MVP of this game. She led her team to victory with 28 points, 7 rebounds 4 assists and 3 blocked shots!

The Second game of the weekend saw the only undefeated team, Woori Bank, take on the only team to have yet to win a game KEB Hana. These games are always tricky for the higher ranked teams as teams are anxious to be the first to knock them off. Hana were close to being the first team to beat Woori Bank this season. After a decent first half by the hosts, Woori took a 10 point lead into the half. However, the third quarter saw Kayla Thornton and Hana fight their way back into the game and for a moment take over the lead. Hana Bank won the quarter 19 to 11. The balanced attacked of Worri reigned supreme in the end as they had too many weapons for Hana to hold off.

Teams are playing their last games of the first round. Once a team plays each of the other five teams, the round is complete. The teams will compete for 8 rounds. This weekend Samsung took on KDB which turned out to be an exciting game. Overtime was needed in Yongin for the winner to be decided. Natasha Howard came up big for the hosts as she arrived late to Korea due to playing in the WNBA finals with the Minnesota Lynx. Howard finished with a double double and Korean post player Bae Hyeyun sealed the deal scoring back to back baskets in overtime. Bae finished tied for a team high in points with 19. For KDB Christmas did all that she could for the visitors as she dominated the boards pulling down more rebounds than points!
