Tamika Catchings is one of the greatest basketball players to ever play the game. After 16 seasons in the WNBA, Catchings will be hanging up her shoes for good at the end of the 2016 season. A decorated star, who is a 3x Olympic Gold Medalist, 5-time Defensive Player of the Year, 10-time WNBA All-Star & 2012 Champion, is leaving one last impression around the league. Throughout her career Catchings has always been active in the community. She has made it clear that she is most proud of her legacy off the court. In 2004 Tamika Catchings founded the Catch the Stars Foundation, which is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission of empowering youth to achieve their dreams by providing goal-setting programs that promote Literacy, Fitness and Mentoring. Based in the Indianapolis area, Catchings hopes to expand the work that Catch the Stars Foundation does to the other 11 WNBA cities.
On her last stop in each WNBA city Catchings has been hosting the Tamika Catchings Legacy Tour to help raise funds for the expansion of her foundation. The tour kicked off May 29th in Atlanta and will continue on throughout the summer. During the tour, Catchings and her Catch The Stars Foundation will conduct a postgame fundraising party in each of the 12 WNBA cities she visits. Catchings will interact and sign autographs with fans while conducting an auction of various high–end Catchings items including the game–specific shoes she wore in the game that night. She will also issue a $2,000 grant to a local community partner that promotes fitness, literacy and mentoring, similar to the Catch The Stars mission. During her stop in New York, Catch The Stars Foundation donated $1,000 each to Liberty player’s Swin Cash’s Cash for Kids Foundation and Tina Charles’ Hopeys Heart Foundation.
With a goal of raising $100,000 during her final WNBA season to assist with expanding Catch The Stars programs there are several ways you can get involved. You can donate online at: www.catchthestars.org or you can text CATCH24 to 50155. Catch the Stars Foundation is a 501C3 organization in which 100% of your donation is tax deductible. If you live in one of the 11 WNBA cities that Catchings will visit this summer you can attend a Post- Game Party after the game and participate in the auction. Help Catchings continue to inspire youth ages 7-18 throughout the country to lead healthier & more active lifestyles, set goals & to dream big. Take a second to view the tour’s upcoming dates.
