Semifinals:

The four remaining teams had already secured qualification, but the playoffs for the championship started on Wednesday.  Brazil had not been tested previously and got off to a solid start against Argentina, but let the underdogs fight their way back to tie the game after third quarter.  The overwhelming favorites recovered with a dominant final frame to win 73-57 with Iziane Castro Marques getting some help from Palmira Cristina Marcal.  The hosts closed the day against Colombia, building a lead early, but then needing to hang on for the 67-59 win.  Waleska Perez paced Venezuela again as she will need her teammates to also be at their best if they want to pull off the upset on Thursday.  Mabel Martinez led all scorers, but it was not enough for the win.

5th Place Playoff:

The day started with the playoff to determine which team might get another chance at making it to next summer’s tournament if a spot opens up after this summer.  Paraguay took the early lead, but Ecuador fought back before falling behind further in the second half and losing 72-52.  Maria Mercado had a great all around performance and got some help from the two former collegiate players.  Dayanna Salcedo had a solid effort in the loss, but it was not enough for the team to qualify again as they did last summer.
