Group A:

Paraguay was the last team in the group to start their tournament as they were also missing their star player, but beat Uruguay 62-56.  Maria Caraves took on the leading role for the team.  Brazil had another easy game, rolling to a 104-54 win over Chile as their three former WNBA players led the way.  Barbara Cousino, who just had a very solid season at the Junior College level, had a good game, but it was not enough in the loss.

Group B:

The other group finally got started on Saturday.  Argentina stifled Ecuador 71-35 as Gisela Vega controlled the paint.  Along with the hosts, Argentina is trying to round into form as they prepare to try to also qualify for the Olympics.  Venezuela gave the home fans something to celebrate by beating Peru 82-52.  No other team has more players with American college experience as Waleska Perez led the way, offsetting a big effort from Daniela Porras in the loss.
