Group A:

It was expected to be one of the most evenly matched groups, but it is probably the least likely of the three teams taking the lead halfway through qualification.  Slovenia downed Latvia 69-51 in a battle of unbeatens, an impressive feat given the strength of Latvia’s roster as they managed to bring in their key players.

Standings: Slovenia 2-0, Latvia 1-1, Lithuania 0-2

Group B:

The Netherlands just managed to get the important 66-63 win at winless Estonia to stay in solid shape at the halfway point.  Croatia got a big game from Iva Ciglar, but it was not enough to get the win against France, which would have put them right back into the picture for qualification.  The visitors took the win by a 79-70 margin to stay in firm position atop the standings.

Group C:

Italy needed a comeback at home to edge Montenegro 57-56 and win the battle of unbeatens despite a great game from Iva Perovanovic.  Great Britain showed no mercy in getting their first win, walloping Albania 122-36 with Johannah Leedham leading the way.

Group D:

Alina Iagupova turned in one of the day’s most impressive performances as Ukraine beat defending champions Serbia 78-75 at home.  The visitors will be disappointed not to have won, but without their best player they should feel like they still have the advantage to turn things around and top the group.  Germany got their 80-36 win over Luxembourg, but they still face a tough path to realistically have a shot at qualification.

Group E:

A battle of winless teams saw Portugal grab their first 68-56 win over Iceland at home.  The other game had a wild finish as Allie Quigley had a huge game for Hungary to help them edge the Slovak Republic 65-64 and move atop the standings at the halfway point.

Group F:

The game for first place was as good as anticipated as Russia escapes Greece with a 67-66 win and advantage for the rest of the qualification process.  Evanthia Maltsi had a good game, but it was not enough for the hosts.  Bulgaria may have a difficult path to moving on, but they did get their first win 74-55 over winless Switzerland.

Group G:

The group was probably expected to be the most competitive and it lives up to the billing halfway through proceedings as all the teams are now tied at 1-1.  Kim Mestdagh and Emma Meesseman were just too much for Poland as Belgium rolled to the 100-63 win at home.

Group H:

The game was as tough as expected, but Turkey is in an excellent position to qualify after a 56-45 win at Romania.  Former Maryland players starred for their teams in the other game as Shay Doron and Israel prevailed 76-72 at home in the battle of winless teams over Lynetta Kizer and Bosnia and Herzgovina.

Group I:

Halfway through qualification, the other two teams know they have a long way to go to catch Spain, so a fight for the one of the runners up places might be the only way to qualify.  Sweden took a step towards that by winning 59-49 in Finland.
