The playoffs started in China with the lower ranked teams hosting the first game of the quarterfinals. Top seed Xinjiang had a tough battle from Liaoning, which was the last team to make the playoffs, but Tina Charles was just too much in the 79-75 win despite Kara Braxton holding her own inside. Also on this side of the bracket, new look Guangdong drew a tough assignment, visiting military team Shenyang and just managing to escape in overtime 81-76. Candace Parker made the most of her rules-limited minutes in her debut as Huang Sijing helped pick up the slack when she was not in the game. Li Meng had the game’s strongest individual effort, but it came in the loss. The battle between Minnesota Lynx teammates happened as Sylvia Fowles returned in time for Beijing to visit Shanxi. While she found little resistance inside, it was Maya Moore returning to her playoff vintage best that helped the hosts to the 79-65 win and the early series advantage. Bayi’s late season run moved them into place to face Shanghai in the quarterfinals and it resulted in a 93-66 first game loss. Elizabeth Cambage was ruthlessly efficient offensively, scoring her 26 points on only 9 field goal attempts as her minutes were limited by rule due to facing a military team. Wei Yuchun provided additional offense in the win.
