The San Antonio Stars finished last in the Western Conference and had the worst record in all of the the WNBA finishing 8-26 for the 2015 season. Although they finished with the worst record they weren’t able to turn that misfortune into a chance to draft Brianna Stewart from Connecticut who will most likely be the number 1 draft pick in the 2016 WNBA draft. They will instead make their selection second. But beyond the draft the Stars have a lot of work to do. Despite having a young star in Kayla McBride and an all star in Danielle Robinson the Stars were never able to put a streak of wins on the board. They dealt with injuries in the beginning of the season and throughout but for the most part they just didn’t play well enough to win in a very tough Western Conference.
Their roster is pretty much set in that it will be up to the organization to make all the moves as they have no free agents on the team. Sophia Malcolm Young announced her retirement at the start of the 2015 season and they will be losing one of the best players to ever suit up for the organization. Outside of Jia Perkins, who averaged 13 points for the Stars last season, the Stars have some nice young talent. Dearica Hamby, who was a rookie last season, showed potential to be a very solid center for the team. Kayla Mcbride continues to improve and as she enters her third season in the WNBA, I think she is ready to be the leader for the Stars.
On paper the Stars have a very competitive team. Kayla Alexander, Alex Montgomery, Daniele Adams, and Jayne Appel are all very capable players. Hopefully this coming season they will have better chemistry and use the experience they have playing together to build upon. I am confident that their record will be much improved this coming season. I suspect that they will make moves in free agency. Perhaps they will sign a veteran or a player that can replace the services of Young. Can you see Devereaux Peters suiting up for the Stars? Will the Stars go the route of building through the draft or will they look to make a big signing during free agency that can contribute right away? It will be interesting to see what the Stars can come up with this offseason. Let us know what you think.
