WNBA Free Agency 2016; Connecticut Sun

At the moment the Connecticut Sun are in search of a new head coach. Back in October, the Sun announced that head coach Anne Donovan had resigned after three seasons with the team. The Sun finished the 2015 WNBA season with a record of 15-19 which was last in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. In their defense, their star and reigning rookie of the year Chiney Ogwumike, was held out for the entire season following her winter knee surgery.  The Connecticut Sun is a team full of young talent and actually were a surprise around the league to start the 2015 season when they went on a seven game winning steak. For a while they were in first place in the Eastern Conference. However, they also went on a two six game losing streaks and at one point dropped 15 of 20 games. Not much to celebrate during the 2015 season but the Sun have much to look forward to in the coming years.

Expect a healthy Ogwumike along side Kelsey Bone, who was named to her first WNBA all star team and won the WNBA’s 2015 most improved player to be a dominant force on the inside. Chelsea Gray, Alyssa Thomas, Alex Bentley, and Elizabeth Williams are a few great young talents who’ve shown that they can compete with the best in the league. The Sun also have a pretty good set of veterans in Jasmine Thomas, Shekinna Stricklen and Camille Little to show this young group the way. It looks as if the Sun are prepared to fight for the ever elusive championship next season. They have all the pieces in place to compete with the best in the east. It is important that they stay healthy to give themselves a fair chance at winning it all. If anything, strengthening their bench should be a priority. The only free agent on the team is Jennifer Lacy who they picked up late in the season. Restricted are Kayla Pedersen, Jasmine Thomas and Shekinna Stricklen. With Chelsea Gray and Alex Bentley able to play the point guard position i’m not sure what they will do with Thomas’s expiring contract. Keeping Stricklen should definitely be high on the Suns list as she has shown that she can put points on the board coming off the bench. What do you think the Sun need to do in free agency? How can they improve their bench? They look to have a pretty solid squad on deck. Now all they have to do is find a coach to lead the time in the right direction.
